Another weekend of Major League Soccer action is upon us and as usual there’s no shortage of stories and plot lines to draw. There’s a Cascadia Cup tie in Seattle, with DC United and Toronto FC facing off and New York City FC welcoming Philly to the Bronx. Here are four tips for the weekend.
New York Red Bulls v Chicago Fire
Red Bull Arena, Friday June 28
The New York Red Bulls come into this match on the back of a 3-2 defeat to the Philadelphia Union, their first defeat in five games. However, that was two weeks ago and Chris Armas’ side have had time to get that loss out of their system. In the Chicago Fire the Red Bulls will face a team that are winless in their last five outings.
In fact, Chicago have failed to win any of their last 20 away matches in MLS. They have also conceded at least twice in two of their last three games on the road. On the other hand, the New York Red Bulls have scored at least twice in their last four league matches, with over 2.5 total goals in five of their last six home games against the Fire.

New York City v Philadelphia Union
Yankee Stadium, Saturday June 29
This will be a heavyweight clash in the Eastern Conference. New York City FC suffered a difficult start to the 2019 season, but have since found a good vein of form, going unbeaten in their last 10 league matches. That streak has lifted them up into sixth place in the East, putting them in a respectable position.
The Philadelphia Union, on the other hand, are sitting at the top of the Eastern Conference after 18 matches. They are undefeated in nine of their last 10 MLS matches. However, Philadelphia have kept just one clean sheet in their last eight outings so there is hope for NYC FC that they can take something off the visitors to Yankee Stadium this weekend.

DC United v Toronto FC
Audi Field, Saturday June 29
Wayne Rooney provided one of the moments of the season on Wednesday when he scored a winner for DC United against Orlando City from inside his own half. That goal snapped a streak of three straight draws for the capital club, pointing them in the right direction again after a slight slump in form in recent weeks.
Toronto FC also snapped an unwanted streak during the week, claiming an impressive 3-2 win over Atlanta United on Wednesday evening. Before that the Canadians had gone eight matches without a win. They had Alejandro Pozeulo to thank for that win during the week and if the Spaniard can find top form again this weekend DC United could be in trouble.

Seattle Sounders v Vancouver Whitecaps
CenturyLink Field, Saturday June 29
Cascadia Cup matches are always a spectacle and this one will be no different as the Seattle Sounders welcome rivals the Vancouver Whitecaps to CenturyLink Field. The Sounders have had a long time to mull over the three straight defeats they suffered before the Gold Cup break and so they will want to make amends for that as quickly as possible.
They will, however, be without frontman Jordan Morris who is away with the United States right now. The Whitecaps, on the other hand, are unbeaten in their last five matches. Seattle have also conceded at least twice in each of their last three games. This will be a chance for Vancouver to beat Seattle on their own patch.
