Another weekend of Major League Soccer action is upon us and as usual there’s no shortage of stories and plot lines to draw upon. There are rivalries all over the place with the LA Galaxy hosting San Jose, Montreal welcoming Toronto FC to Stade Saputo and a Hudson River Derby as well. Here are four tips for the weekend in MLS.
LA Galaxy v San Jose Earthquakes
Dignity Health Sports Park, Friday July 12
LAFC might have usurped the San Jose Earthquakes as the LA Galaxy’s main rivals, but the ‘Cali Clasico’ remains one of the fiercest, most compelling fixtures in Major League Soccer. This is a match which has produced countless great moments through the years and with three wins and a draw in their last five meetings against the Galaxy, the Quakes will fancy their chances.
San Jose are also in good form having won three of their last four. The one defeat they did suffer on that run came away from home, though. Indeed, the Quakes struggle somewhat on the road. There has been over 2.5 goals in six of the last seven ‘Cali Classics,’ while San Jose have scored at least twice in six of their last seven games against their rivals.

Houston Dynamo v Los Angeles FC
BBVA Compass Stadium, Friday July 12
Make no mistake, Los Angeles FC are the team to beat in MLS right now. Bob Bradley’s side are running away with the Supporters’ Shield, scoring 11 times in their last two matches. They did suffer a surprise defeat to the Colorado Rapids a few weeks ago, but that was a mere blip in what is quickly turning into an historic season.
LAFC have been winning at half time and full time of six of their last eight matches. They have scored at least two goals in their last three matches against Houston in all competitions. However, the Dynamo are undefeated in their last 10 games at BBVA Compass Stadium and are on a decent run of form at the moment.

Montreal Impact v Toronto FC
Stade Saputo, Saturday July 13
This is another heated rivalry between two teams who don’t like each other. The Montreal Impact have had the upper hand in recent times over Toronto FC, winning three of their last five meetings against their rivals. TFC also come into this match in poor form, failing to win 10 of their last 11 league games.
The home side has won four of the last five instances of this rivalry strengthening further the Montreal Impact’s status as favourites for this match. The Impact have scored two or more goals in their last three home matches and there have been over 2.5 total goals in their last seven games in all competitions. This one could produce drama.

New York Red Bulls v New York City FC
Red Bull Arena, Sunday July 14
It’s up for debate whether or not this is now the biggest derby in MLS, but either way the Hudson River Derby, as this fixture has come to be known, is about as compelling a game as North American soccer has to offer. The New York Red Bulls come into this match without a win in their last two outings, while New York City FC lost to the Portland Timbers last weekend.
NYC FC have scored at least two goals in five of their last six away matches, while the Red Bulls have scored two or more in six of their last seven games in the league. This one promises goals, with over 2.5 total goals scored in the home team’s last five MLS fixtures. NYC FC are unbeaten in their last six games on the road.
