MLS Picks - Matchweek: 23
Another weekend of Major League Soccer action is upon us and as usual there’s no shortage of stories and plot lines to draw upon. There are compelling fixtures right across the two divisions with a Cascadia Cup clash in the Pacific Northwest. Here are four picks for the weekend in MLS.
CenturyLink Field, Saturday August 10
There was disappointment for the Seattle Sounders last time out in front of their own fans, with Sporting KC leaving CenturyLink Field last weekend with all three points. However, the home side is unbeaten in their last five meetings with the New England Revolution with over 2.5 goals scored in five of Seattle’s last six matches.
Bruce Arena has made an immediate impact at the New England Revolution with the Foxborough side undefeated in their last five away games. They have also scored at least two goals in each of their last four appearances away from Gillette Stadium. This doesn’t look like being an easy test for the Sounders.
1u - Back Draw @ +280
BMO Field, Saturday August 10
Toronto FC come into this game on the back of a toothless 2-0 defeat to the New York Red Bulls. That was on the road, though, where the Canadians have struggled to find the best of their form so far this season. Greg Vanney’s side will return to BMO Field this weekend where they have won two of their last three, their most recent of which came against FC Cincinnati.
The hosts will be without Justin Morrow through suspension while Cristian Higuita and Will Johnson will be unavailable through injury for Orlando City, who ended a three-game winless slump with victory against FC Dallas in their last outing. There could be goals in this one. TFC have scored two or more in their last six home matches.
1u - Back Over 2.5 Goals @ -200
Providence Park, Saturday August 10
The Portland Timbers saw a six-game unbeaten run come to an end with defeat to Minnesota United in their last outing. Despite this, Gio Savarese’s side come into this match in good shape and will fancy their chances of returning to winning ways against Cascadia Cup rivals the Vancouver Whitecaps in front of their own fans.
Portland are undefeated in 12 of their last 13 matches at Providence Park. On the flip side, there has been over 2.5 goals scored in five of Vancouver’s last six games. The Timbers have been a good bet at home since returning to the redeveloped Providence Park and they will be a good bet again here.
2u - Back Portland Timbers To Win @ -275
Mercedes Benz Stadium, Sunday August 11
Atlanta United come into this match on the back of three wins in their last four league games. Their momentum was added to with the US Open Cup semi final win over rivals Orlando City during the week. Atlanta have won nine of their last 10 games in front of the own supporters at Mercedes Benz Stadium. They have made the place a fortress again.
On the flip side, New York City FC come into this match on the back of a disappointing defeat to Real Salt Lake and there’s no suggestion that they will have it any easier this weekend. Atlanta United have been winning at half time and full time of seven of their last nine home games. They have also kept a clean sheet in eight of their last 10 matches at home.
