New England Revolution vs. Philadelphia Union prediction for Sunday's matchup between two teams looking to win the MLS Eastern Conference.
ANALYSIS

MLS Picks: New England Revolution vs. Philadelphia Union Prediction

This promises to be the marquee match-up of this weekend in Major League Soccer with the New England Revolution and Philadelphia Union both serious forces at the top of the Eastern Conference. Indeed, this might well be the fixture with the highest quality on display in either conference this season such is the strength of both sides.

But while the Revs are unbeaten in their last five league outings (of which they have won four), the Union’s form has been slightly patchier having won just one of their last four. Gillette Stadium is a difficult place to visit and so New England could be considered favourites to claim all three points and keep top spot in the East.

New England Revolution vs. Philadelphia Union Prediction

When: Sunday, August 8 at 6:00 PM ET

Where: Gillette Stadium

New England have made Gillette Stadium something of a fortress this season, with Bruce Arena's side winning seven of the last eight MLS matches they have played there. Philadelphia, on the other hand, have failed to win any of their last six league games on the road. This contrasting form points to a Revolution win this Sunday.

Not only this, New England have scored two or more goals in each of their last four matches in front of their own supporters. Nashville managed to keep Arena’s side quiet in mid-week, claiming a 0-0 draw, but the Revs remain one of the most potent attacking outfits in the league, certainly at home (no MLS team has scored more than them (33) this season).

If, however, the Philadelphia Union can take the lead, they might stand a chance of achieving a result against New England such is their strength at protecting what they have. Indeed, Jim Curtin's side tend not to let winning positions slip which speaks to their coaching and strength of structure.

With a number of players returning from Gold Cup duty, New England and Philadelphia could be somewhere close to full strength for this fixture. Both teams will likely match up against each other in a 4-3-2-1 shape which could leave the centre of the pitch somewhat congested. This could be a game of fine margins between two high quality rivals.
