Portland Timbers vs. Los Angeles FC Prediction and Pick
When: Sunday, September 19, 7:30 pm ET
Where: Providence Park, Portland, OR
Just one point separates the Portland Timbers and Los Angeles FC in the Western Conference table, with the 2021 Major League Soccer playoffs fast approaching on the horizon. This promises to be one of the marquee matches in the division this weekend, even if both teams have had their weaknesses exposed over the summer.
However, LAFC comes into this match on the back of three straight victories while the Timbers are unbeaten in their last four (three wins, one draw). Here are some tips and predictions ahead of the MLS fixture between the Portland Timbers and LAFC on Sunday, September 19.
Portland Timbers vs. Los Angeles FC
As already referenced, LAFC has turned around its form following a difficult summer period. Bob Bradley’s side went seven matches without a win over July and August, with some even questioning whether the Banc of California Stadium outfit would fall out of the playoff spots in the West before the post-season.
However, back-to-back wins over Sporting KC, Real Salt Lake, and Austin FC, as well as a 3-3 draw against the LA Galaxy in El Trafico, have pointed LAFC in the right direction again, with Eduard Atuesta doing more than anyone else to spark the turnaround. With this sort of momentum behind them, LAFC is a real force.
LAFC has scored two or more goals in each of their last four MLS matches, while there have been over 2.5 total goals in the previous three league matches the Portland Timbers have played in front of their fans. All this points to Sunday’s match, likely producing goals with both teams better at putting the ball in the net than keeping it out.
The Timbers were on a three-game winning run of their own until they were held to a 2-2 draw by the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday night. While Portland was disappointed to have dropped points on their patch, Sebastian Blanco’s stoppage-time equalizer still added to the sense that they are building momentum, just as LAFC is.
