Seattle Sounders vs. Real Salt Lake Predictions: Can Seattle Shut Down RSL?
The 2021 Major League Soccer play-offs continue with the Seattle Sounders hosting Real Salt Lake in the first round this week. Brian Schmetzer’s team have made the MLS Cup final in four of the last five years and are expected to make another deep run in the post-season this season despite finishing second in the Western Conference.
Real Salt Lake, on the other hand, only just made the playoffs in the West by the skin of their teeth, finishing seventh in the standings by goal difference alone. Here are some tips and information ahead of the MLS first-round playoff match between the Seattle Sounders and Real Salt Lake on Tuesday 23 November.
Seattle Sounders vs Real Salt Lake Prediction
MLS play-offs round one, Lumen Field, Tuesday 23 November 10.30pm ET
The omens are good for the Seattle Sounders ahead of this crunch match at Lumen Field. Indeed, Schmetzer’s team has won 11 of their last 12 home matches against Real Salt Lake in all competitions. What’s more, the Sounders have scored two or more goals in each of their last three home matches against Tuesday’s opponents.
However, Seattle enters the play-offs in poor form having failed to win any of their last six regular season matches. This slide saw them lose top spot in the Western Conference and Schmetzer must make sure this insecurity doesn’t seep into their play-off form. The Sounders have to pick up their level from Tuesday night.
Despite their recent poor form, Seattle boasts the best defensive record in the West after conceding just 33 times in 34 regular season fixtures. This will be tested by an RSL team capable of carrying an attacking threat, but Pablo Mastroeni’s side are also renowned for being vulnerable in defense.
Momentum is so important in playoff soccer and the Seattle Sounders have very little of this at this specific moment in time. However, the 2020 MLS Cup finalists will surely still have enough quality and pedigree, with a number of key figures back from injury, to see off Real Salt Lake at Lumen Field on Tuesday night.
