At last, it’s time for the 2021 Major League Soccer Supporters’ Shield winners to enter the play-off fold with the New England Revolution set to host New York City FC in the Eastern Conference final this week. This promises to be one of the most compelling match-ups in the post-season so far, with both sides boasting genuine quality.

While this is the Revs’ first play-off match of 2021, NYC FC enter this game on the back of a 2-0 win over Atlanta United. Ronny Deila’s side looks to be in good shape. Here are some tips and information ahead of the Eastern Conference semi-final on Wednesday, December 1.

Bruce Arena’s New England Revolution side broke records in the regular season as they surged to the Supporters’ Shield with an all-time high points tally. However, it’s possible the number one seeds could come into this match cold. They have had to wait a long time on the sidelines for their first post-season match.

Nonetheless, the Revs are a strong outfit, and the break has allowed some injuries to clear up. They will be at full-strength for the home fixture against NYC FC with Carles Gil, the main man for the Supporters’ Shield winners. They might have suffered a final day defeat to Inter Miami to end the regular season, but that wasn’t a reflection of the quality of this side.

NYC FC is unbeaten in their last six matches and has the MLS Golden Boot winner, Valentin Castellanos, to lead the line. If the 23-year-old can find his shooting beats, as he did in the first-round victory over Atlanta United, Deila’s team will stand a good chance of securing their place in the Eastern Conference final.

There have been under 2.5 goals in nine of New York City FC’s last 11 games, suggesting that a single goal could decide this encounter. However, many believe these two teams are the best the Eastern Conference can offer right now, and so there could be a high degree of tactical thinking on display on the pitch.
