Southampton: Takes After First Round

Southampton’s Premier League campaign opened with defeat away from home at Everton. As always under Ralph Hasenhüttl, Southampton were a very organized side. Adam Armstrong scored after 22 minutes giving Southampton the lead and things were going on the right direction. Unfortunately, the 2nd half it was like watching another movie, a drama. Let’s take something positive from this game. Che Adams and Armstrong connected very well against Everton, and we expect this to be an important piece of the puzzle for Southampton.

The punters are talking about a relegation fight, but Hasenhüttl will definitely not let that happen. He is aiming for a top-half finish, but expectations should be tempered due to the loss of Ings and Vestergaard. Most of their fans’ goal is to remain in the league. They need 2-3 games more under the belt, they need to improve their squad depth with 2-3 more players, and they will be just fine.

The fans couldn’t ask for more… Perfect start to their domestic campaign, very entertaining match, an amazing hat-trick from Bruno Fernandes and 4 assists from Paul Pogba. His footwork was superb against Leeds, he was very relaxed during the entire game, making it look effortless.

United’s answer to Leeds’ equalizer was deadly. In 5 minutes, they scored 2 more goals with Pogba serving 2 great assists to Greenwood and Fernandes. All in all, United’s performance was brilliant, but let’s be honest, Leeds helped them to achieve this level. They went all in and left a huge gap at the back, which was a big plus for United’s attacking line.

Solskjaer is yet to win a trophy with United and it’s difficult to say that the style improved significantly. He is blessed with many attacking options, he signed another creative player (Jadon Sancho from Dortmund), Marcus Rashford and Edison Cavani are expected to return soon, Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes are on fire (if we can say that after just 1 match). They have all the necessary weapons to dominate 95% of their Premier League opponents.

With all the players fit, Solskjaer will surely have some big problems in selecting the starting XI. It’s true, the season is long, they will play in Champions League, domestic cups and also the Premier League. If they want to win silverware they must maintain high energy levels, great tempo in every single match and motivation. This will help them keep their consistency and will bring positive results.

Despite exploring the possibility of signing new players (Eduardo Camavinga, Pau Torres and Kieran Trippier have been linked with a move to Old Trafford), the Red Devils are unlikely to make another transfer.
