Manchester United vs. Manchester City Prediction

Man United: Disjointed

Manchester United has been on a wild ride lately, but we managed to read them in their previous two Premier League round. We tipped them to lose against Liverpool and win against Tottenham with our double-dip play (Man United ML and Man United -1.5).

After a four-game winless run in the EPL, they returned to winning ways against Spurs, but they failed to win two games in a row, being held to a 2-2 draw by Atalanta in the Champions League midweek action. They are simply not able to carry over the momentum. They won two games in a row across all competitions just once all season long (EPL Round 3 and 4 against Wolves and Newcastle).

Their lack of consistency saw them drop till 5th in the EPL standings, and they are now trailing leaders Chelsea by eight points. It looks like they are lost without Cristiano Ronaldo, whose transfer is the best thing that happened to them this season. He’s carrying the Red Devils on his back, and 13 of his 15 goals across all competitions have come from a losing and drawing position. Perhaps Man United’s youngsters should aim to arrive at his level and work more.

It’s a must to admire him when you are playing in the same team (and not only), but it’s more important to work as much as he does at 36 years of age. On top of that, he’s mastering the mental like no other. Most players are losing their legs when they are two goals down but not Cristiano. His fighting spirit, his professional attitude on and out the pitch, and his focus are there all the time.

Enough about Cristiano, let’s talk about Fred and Scott McTominay! I’m joking. There’s nothing to talk about them. They simply don’t exist for me. We talked about them for three weeks in a row. Next time we should maybe call Ole Gunnar Solskjær and offer him some stats and heatmaps.

Man City: No Striker, No Problem

What formation does Manchester City play? The answer is very simple: Guardiola’s formation. He can play a 5-3-2 formation with a consistent high press; he can play 4-2-3-1, giving more power to the wings; 4-4-2 creative a box of four midfielders. It’s very important to note that he has taken the false 9 role to whole new levels as they are striker-less.

They suffered a shocking defeat last weekend, losing to Crystal Palace 2-0 after being knocked out from the Carabao Cup by West Ham. They already dropped points in four games this season, and they are trailing leaders Chelsea by five points.

It’s not a surprise to see Manchester City as odds-on favorites here, but this should be close than the odds suggest. The Citizens conceded in 7 of their previous 8 games across all competitions but have scored 15 goals in their last six games, and they will fancy their chances against United’s poor defensive line.

Phil Foden, Ferran Torres, Raheem Sterling, and Jack Grealish have all played as central attackers this season, with Foden having more success than the rest. Once again, he’s expected to be the focal point in City’s attack as Ferran Torres is being ruled out for another couple of months. The Citizens have struggled for goals in recent derbies failing to find the back of the net in each of their previous three head-to-heads with United.

Man United vs. Man City Betting Picks

Cristiano Ronaldo had another excellent European performance, scoring in stoppage time to save one point against Atalanta, and of course, he’s favored to find the back of the against the Citizens, being priced at +150 with Bet365.

It’s a derby, and nothing matters, the positions in the standings, the form, the consistency. But United is dreadful at the back, but they do possess superb attacking firepower. So we fancy them to find the back of the net, but we also expect them to lose this one.

Man United vs. Man City Pick

  • Man City to Win and Both Teams to Score (+225)
