The English Premier League (EPL) returns this weekend for the 2022 season, as Manchester City will look to repeat as champions after beating out Liverpool by just one point in 2021. While some might consider the table wide open with the start of a new season, Manchester City and Liverpool are still the teams to beat as the action gets started this weekend. 

With Arsenal vs Crystal Palace getting us started on Friday, let’s take a closer look at the top prop plays of the first week of EPL action.

Fulham (+1000) vs. Liverpool (-380) This game has the potential to get out of hand quickly, as it pits EPL newcomer Fulham (who was in relegation last season) vs. the dominant force that is Liverpool. Finishing second on the table behind Manchester City last season, the Reds finished with 28 wins and blew more teams out of the water than any other team in the league. 

On the other side, Fulham charged through the tier two league all the way to the English League Championship, earning the right to get back to the EPL. A large part of their success came via striker Aleksandar Mitrović, who finished the season with 43 goals and seven assists.

While the schedulers did Fulham no favors here, where they likely get blown out against the more talented Liverpool, I think there’s a ton of value on Mitrović finding the back of the net at 8/1 against what at times has been a shaky back line for Liverpool.

Newcastle United vs. Nottingham Forest Prediction

Newcastle United (-160) vs. Nottingham Forest (+490) Newcastle is going to be a team to look out for all season long, as they now have one of the wealthiest owners in all of international football. Finishing in the middle of the table last season, they are all but guaranteed to make a jump this season; picking up pieces along the way if not. 

In their three friendlies in the build-up to the season this summer, Newcastle finished 2-1 with a goal differential of +3.

As for Nottingham Forest, their first season after promotion from the second-tier league last season is starting off with a difficult matchup. So far so good, however, as this summer’s friendlies have finished 2-0-1 with a goal differential of +3. This includes a critical draw against La Liga’s Valencia on July 30th, no doubt a confidence boost heading into this season. 

While I expect Newcastle to get the win here, and many throughout the season, I really like for third-year striker Callum Wilson to take a jump this season after scoring 20 goals over his first two. Already having scored in the preseason, look for Wilson to find the back of the net here in game one.
