Man United Breakdown: With or Without Cristiano
The fight for points begins this weekend as the Premier League’s first round promises to be an exciting one. We’re even waiting for some upsets and this might be one of them. Manchester United took another concerning step in a backward direction during the 2021/22 campaign, with the Red Devils finishing in sixth place. United have just completed their worst season in Premier League history, earning just 58 points, 35 behind champions Man City.
They now have a chance to improve under their new manager Erik ten Hag but we don’t expect them to get anywhere near Man City and Liverpool, or even Chelsea and Tottenham. What we are saying is that they won’t finish in the top 4. They are still trying to add some extra quality to the squad with the summer transfer window closing in 25 days but they have issues reaching to agreements.
Argentina international Lisandro Martinez is their big-money transfer so far, after finally completing a $59m move from Ajax. They also signed Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord, with Denmark international Christian Eriksen arriving on a free transfer following his departure from Brentford. That’s not enough for a team fighting for the title.
The Red Devils played twice last weekend as they brought their pre-season to an end. They won the first three games against Liverpool, Melbourne Victory, and Crystal Palace but they failed to beat Aston Villa and Rayo Vallecano being kept to draw games and they lost to Atletico Madrid. Unfortunately, they lost Anthony Martial who picked up an injury against Diego Simeone’s troops.
Jadon Sancho was forced to miss out against Atletico last Saturday due to illness while Luke Shaw was not even involved but they are both expected to recover in time for Sunday’s clash. Ronaldo may be included in the squad after playing the first half against Rayo, but the veteran striker is short on match fitness and he might even leave the club this summer.
Brighton Breakdown: Fighting Spirit
Brighton has all the necessary weapons to go to Old Trafford and take the game to the hosts this week. They will try to keep the ball and frustrate Manchester United, taking advantage of their defensive struggles. They will be hoping to put in a similar kind of display to the one that helped them to a famous 4-0 win over the Red Devils back in May.
That was just the third win for Brighton in 10 Premier League meetings with the Red Devils but they scored in seven games in the process and we expect them to do it again. They lost two of their most important players this week with Marc Cucurella moving to Chelsea for $75m and Yves Bissouma to Tottenham for $30m. Let’s see how clever they will spend part of that profit.
Under Graham Potter, Brighton has looked energized and very combative. The team had their highest-ever Premier League finish last season when they finished 9th in the standings. They will definitely pull off many upsets this term giving a scare to teams battling for the top spots. Belgian international, Leandro Trossard is the player to watch for the visitors with the forward scoring a hat-trick in the last pre-season friendly against Espanyol.
Man United vs. Brighton Prediction
Brighton is a tough nut to crack and if you underestimate them, they will bite. We wouldn’t be surprised if United drops points here but it’s the start of the season and it’s better to avoid the ML market and focus on other markets.
We expect an entertaining match in which Brighton should have enough to answer and contribute on the scoreboard. When these two clubs play each other the goals usually flow with at least three goals being produced in five of their last six meetings across all competitions.
