This is when the CONCACAF Gold Cup gets real. The group stages are out of the way and now is when the frontrunners, the likes of Mexico and the United States, will really start to stretch their legs. At the same time, this is when some of the smaller nations (like Haiti or Curacao) can break through the glass ceiling. Here are four tips for the Gold Cup quarter finals.

Haiti v Canada

NRG Stadium, Saturday June 29

Haiti have perhaps been the surprise package of this summer’s Gold Cup so far. They won all three of their group games, beating Costa Rica in their final match, to make the quarter finals of the competition. With a winnable game against Canada now in front of them, Haiti will fancy their chances of making the semi finals, which would be quite a remarkable achievement.

Canada, however, have also enjoyed a successful tournament so far, with the Canucks crushing Cuba 7-0 in their final group game on Monday. Jonathan David will be one to watch, with the rising star already notching five times in three appearances at the Gold Cup. This could be a tight affair between two evenly matched teams.

Mexico v Costa Rica

NRG Stadium, Saturday June 29

Despite being without a number of their biggest names and best players (Javier Hernandez, Hector Herrera, Carlos Vela to name just three), Mexico remain the favourites to win this summer’s Gold Cup, backed up by their start to the tournament. Indeed, El Tri have three wins from their opening three games, although they were tested in their last outing.

By scoring twice in a 3-2 defeat, Martinique showed that there are weaknesses to expose in this Mexico side, although with Costa Rica struggling to find their best form at this Gold Cup it’s doubtful whether they can topple the favourites. Raul Jimenez and Carlos Antuna have been on fire at this tournament and will be good bets to score here.

Jamaica v Panama

Lincoln Financial Field, Sunday June 30

Jamaica finished top of Group C to progress to the knockout rounds of the Gold Cup, but they did so with a less than impressive record, only winning one of their three games. They have been leaky at the back, conceding three goals in three games. Their attack has been sustaining them, but what happens if they draw a blank in this quarter final tie?

Panama, on the other hand, won their first two group games before coming up against the United States in their last match. This is a match they will not only fancy their chances of winning, but expect to win having finished third at the last two Gold Cups. This draw gives them an opportunity match that achievement once again.

USA v Curacao

Lincoln Financial Field, Sunday June 30

All of a sudden, things are looking rather rosy for the USA under new head coach Gregg Berhalter. There were concerns around the national team ahead of this summer’s Gold Cup, but the United States have won all of their three games so far without conceding a single goal in the process. On the flip side, they have scored 11 times.

Curacao have made the knockout rounds of this competition for the first time since they changed named from Netherlands Antilles, pulling off one of the surprises of the Gold Cup by beating Honduras in the group stage. However, this is a team that doesn’t score many and against a mean USA defence it’s difficult to envisage them making a mark.
