Here's our picks for day three of Wimbledon 2019

Grand Slams are never entirely predictable, as demonstrated by the first couple days of Wimbledon. Seeds have fallen in both the men’s and the women’s draw and there is plenty to draw the eye on Wednesday’s order of play at SW19. Here are four tips for the day at The Championships.

Felix Auger Aliassime v Corentin Moutet

Wimbledon men’s singles second round, Wednesday July 3

He is seen as the next big thing in men’s tennis and Felix Auger Aliassime backed this up by winning his first round match against Vasek Pospisil. The rise of the Canadian in 2019 has been astonishing, but on the other side of the net he will face another promising youngster just off the back of a big first round win.

20-year-old Corentin Moutet came from two sets down to see off Grigor Dimitrov on Monday and so the Frenchman could be a dangerous opponent for Auger Aliassime. These two have only played once before and the Canadian came out on top. If he returns as he did against Pospisil (he won 41% of his return points) he should move into the third round.

Karen Khachanov v Feliciano Lopez

Wimbledon men’s singles second round, Wednesday July 3

Feliciano Lopez is something of a grass court specialist. We saw that at Queen’s as the 37-year-old won both the singles and the doubles and in his first round match against Marcos Giron, which he won comfortably in straight sets. The Spaniard has made the quarter finals of Wimbledon three times before and while that sort of run might be beyond him this year, it’s on this surface where he still finds his best tennis.

Karen Khachanov came through his first round match in four sets and despite his lowly current ranking is fancied by many to make a deep run at The Championships this year. He too has a game that is well suited to the green stuff and so this could be a match that goes the distance. This could be a grounds pass gem for those at SW19 on Wednesday.

0.5u - Back Five Sets @ +215

Caroline Wozniacki v Veronika Kudermetova

Wimbledon women’s singles second round, Wednesday July 3

For 20 to 30 minutes, Caroline Wozniacki was in trouble in her first round match against Sara Sorribes Tormo. The Dane found herself a double break and 4-1 down and was struggling badly to find her flow. However, an injury to her opponent afforded Wozniacki a reprieve and so she arrives in the second round relatively fresh, but still unsure of her true level.

The former world number one has always struggled at Wimbledon having only ever made it as far as the fourth round. Injuries have become a real issue for Wozniacki of late and her first round match didn’t exactly allay any fears. What’s more, Veronika Kudermetova knocked the Dane out of the French Open just two months ago.

Cori Gauff v Magdalena Rybarikova

Wimbledon women’s singles second round, Wednesday July 3

She has already provided one of the storylines of this year’s Championships, becoming the youngest women to ever win a singles match at Wimbledon, beating Venus Williams in the first round. Indeed, it felt like the arrival of Cori Gauff on the big stage. Now, however, she must back up that arrival.

What was most impressive about Gauff’s technical performance against Williams was her serve. She won 78% of her first serve points and 53% of her second serve points. However, young players tend to struggle to keep consistency in their serving. That should be her primary focus against Magdalena Rybarikova in this second round match.
