Here's our picks for day eight of Wimbledon 2019
ANALYSIS

It’s women’s quarter finals day at Wimbledon and there are some blockbuster matches in store for those at SW19 today. Serena Williams, Johanna Konta and Simona Halep are all in action with everyone still in the tournament at this stage dreaming of lifting that famous, golden trophy. Here are three tips for Tuesday at Wimbledon.

Alison Riske v Serena Williams

Wimbledon women’s singles quarter final, Tuesday July 9

It was one of the shocks of the Championships so far. Ash Barty must have fancied her chances of making the quarter finals, but after taking the first set of her fourth round match on Monday, but the world number one was defeated in three sets by Alison Riske. Now, the American faces arguably the best women’s player of all time. It doesn’t get much easier.

Serena Williams is looking for her fourth straight Wimbledon semi finals appearance and has won 10 of her last 11 matches on grass. This is the first time that the two Americans will have met each other so there is no previous track record to draw on, but Williams is surely the strong favourite to progress into the next round.

Barbora Strycova v Johanna Konta

Wimbledon women’s singles quarter final, Tuesday July 9

Shouldering the hopes of a nation is never easy, but that’s what Johanna Konta is doing as she enters the quarter finals at Wimbledon. Her fourth round win over Petra Kvitova underlined her championship credentials, coming from behind to see off the former Wimbledon champion. This will be another tough test.

Barbora Strycova also won her previous match in three sets, demonstrating her fighting qualities. She impressed with her receiving in that win against Elise Mertens, but she struggled with her serving, losing four service games during the match. Konta won 38% of her receiving points against Kvitova. This is a golden chance for the Brit to make the Wimbledon semi finals for the second time.

Simona Halep v Shuai Zhang

Wimbledon women’s singles quarter final, Tuesday July 9

The fairytale had to end at some point and for Coco Gauff, the 15-year-old who caught the imagination by making the fourth round of her first ever Grand Slam, it did with a defeat to Simona Halep. Of course, there is no shame in that with the Romanian one of the frontrunners to win the whole tournament. She is in good form.

It was Halep’s receiving form that saw her through against Gauff, winning 52% of her points on the American’s serve. She will need that sort of form against Shaui Zhang, the Chinese superstar who has a winning record against Halep (won two, lost one). Shuai also won 56% of her receiving points against Dayana Yastremska in the fourth round, suggesting that there could be a number of breaks of serve in this quarter final.
