Here's our picks for Monday's US Open action

The 2019 US Open is into the second week and it’s at this point that things start to get serious. Matches get tougher to call from this point one, with everyone left in the draw now dreaming of going all the way. There are a number of compelling ties scheduled for play on Monday. Here are four picks for Day Eight at Flushing Meadows.

Sasha Zverev v Diego Schwartzman

US Open men’s singles round of 16, Monday September 2

In typical Sascha Zverev fashion, the German has made it as tough as possible for himself at this year’s US Open. This is the first time Zverev has made the second week at Flushing Meadows, but he’s had to work for it, going the distance in his opening two rounds and only beating Aljaz Bedene in four sets in the last round.

On the flip side, Diego Schwartzman is one of the few players on the men’s side not to have dropped a set in the three matches he has played so far. The Argentine is in very strong form on the hard courts of North America after winning a title at Los Cabos in Mexico last month. Schwartzman is inconsistent, but so is Zverev at the Grand Slams and the former’s freshness over the latter could be a deciding factor.

0.5u - Back Diego Schwartzman To Win @ +100

Taylor Townsend v Bianca Andreescu

US Open women’s singles round of 16, Monday September 2

Taylor Townsend has already provided the defining storyline on the women’s side of this years US Open by making it this far. The American qualifier backed up her shock win over Simona Halep by beating Sorana Cirstea in the third round, but now she will face Bianca Andreescu who is also enjoying a magnificent run at Flushing Meadows.

The Canadian teenager saw off Caroline Wozniacki in the last round and at 19 is currently the youngest player in the top 20. Townsend has actually already beaten Andreescu at this year’s US Open in the women’s doubles, but this will be a very different sort of match. There’s no denying that Andreescu is a greater talent, but Townsend has real momentum behind her.

1.5u - Back Set One Over 8.5 Total Games @ -233

Marin Cilic v Rafael Nadal

US Open men’s singles round of 16, Monday September 2

This is the blockbuster tie of the round of 16 on the men’s side. These are two former US Open champions and so both players know what success in New York tastes like. Of course, Rafael Nadal comes into this match as the strong favourite. The Spaniard is arguably the frontrunner to win the whole tournament after the shoulder injury suffered by Novak Djokovic.

Marin Cilic has endured a difficult season, but has found a vein of form at the US Open. Even still, the Croatian made too many errors in his last match against John Isner to suggest he can truly trouble Nadal with the world number two in this shape. Cilic will struggle to take a set against the Spaniard.

2u - Back Rafael Nadal 3-0 @ -117

Naomi Osaka v Belinda Bencic

US Open women’s singles round of 16, Monday September 2

There has rarely been a third round match as highly anticipated as the one between Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff on Saturday night was. Against the much-hyped teenager, the defending US Open champion made a statement of intent, swatting aside Gauff in straight sets. After a dismal summer season, Osaka is looking like a contender again.

The withdrawal of Anna Kontaveit gave Belinda Bencic a bye through to the round of 16, but Osaka was only on court for little over an hour so fatigue won’t be a factor. What could be a factor is the track record between these two players. Bencic has won all three of the matches she has played against Osaka in her career, with their match in Madrid earlier this year going the distance. Nonetheless, it’s tough to see past Osaka.

1.5u - Back Naomi Osaka To Win @ -225
