It’s not often in tennis we see the kind of dominance we’ve seen from Novak Djokovic over the last 10 years at the Australian Open. Of the last 10 Australian Opens, Djokovic has won an unbelievable seven.
In his career, Djokovic has never lost an Australian Open final, he is 8-0. Still, while he’s not the quite the underdog in this year’s final against Daniil Medvedev, there is a growing sentiment among fans that this year could bring us the first ever Australian Open finals loss from Djokovic.
As of Friday, Djokovic is the slight favorite, listed at -110. Meanwhile, Medvedev sits at +100. So, who is going to win this weekend’s Australian Open Men’s Final? Let’s take a look.
Australian Open Men’s Final Prediction: Djokovic vs. Medvedev
This is, most likely, the matchup that fans expected to see in this year’s final. These are two of the best hard-court players in the world, with Djokovic being one of the GOATs. If you take a look at their all-time head-to-head record you see Djokovic has a 4-to-3 edge over Medvedev, but recent results and form may give us a clearer look.
Medvedev, after dropping his first three matches to Djokovic, has won three of the last four times these two have met. Of late, the matchup has belonged to Medvedev, despite Djokovic having the lifetime advantage.
As far as recent form is concerned, the edge once again goes to Medvedev. Medvedev has been the stronger player in this year’s Australian Open. He won his first two matches in straight sets before a five-set win over Filip Krajinović in Round 3. Those two sets dropped to Krajinovic are the only two he’s lost all tournament. He defeated Michael McDonald, Andrey Rublev and Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets to make it to the final.
For Djokovic, it hasn’t been so smooth. From the First Round to the semifinals he had just one straight-set victory, coming in the opener over Jeremy Chardy. But, in the semifinals he returned to the form we are so used to seeing from one of the greatest tennis players ever. Djokovic dominated Aslan Karatsev in three sets to book his trip to the finals.
So, with all that said, who do I like? I’m riding with Medvedev to pull off the upset and deliver Djokovic his first ever loss in the Asutralian Open finals. I know, it’s unfamiliar territory for the 25-year old Russian, playing in just his second Grand Slam Final ever, but I think he has the type of game that can throw Djokovic off his defensive style. Plus, I'm going to go with the player playing better tennis right now, and that's Medvedev.
I’m going to be taking Medvedev to win at +100, and I’m also sprinkling on Medvedev to win 3-1 at +500.
