Australian Open Men's Draw Second Round Predictions: Tommy Paul Carries the Torch for Americans

The first round of the Australian Open is complete, and there have been several upsets in the Men’s draw thus far. No. 12 seed Cameron Norrie shockingly lost in straight sets to Sebastian Korda. In addition, No. 21 seed Nikoloz Basilashvili, No. 22 John Isner, No. 29 Ugo Humbert, and No. 30 Lloyd Harris lost their first-round matches. In combination with No. 1 Novak Djokovic and No. 8 Casper Ruud’s withdrawals, those results have made the Men’s side very topsy turvy to this point.

Are we in for more surprises in the second round? We preview our best bets from the men’s draw of the third day of matches for the Australian Open.

Soonwoo Kwon vs. Denis Shapovalov OVER 3.5 Sets (-140) (Bet $140 to win $100)

Click Here for Kwon vs Shapovalov Odds

Soonwoo Kwon finally got the monkey off his back, winning his first-ever match at the Australian Open after losing his first four. Kwon was defeated in the first round of the Australian Open in 2018, 2020, and 2021 and was eliminated in the qualifying stage in 2019. Though Kwon was on the court for a long time in his five-set first round victory over Holger Rune, we expect the alleviated pressure of earning his first win in Melbourne to have him play looser tonight.

Kwon has now reached the second round of each Grand Slam tournament, and the No. 54-ranked player in the world will be no pushover. Denis Shapovalov struggled to defeat Laslo Djere in the first round in four sets, with two of those sets won by tiebreak. Shapovalov has failed to cover the game spread in six of his last seven ATP main draw matches at the Australian Open, which should open the door for Kwon to be competitive here. And though the Canadian has won his last five ATP Second Round matches, we prefer the value of this set betting prop instead of his much steeper moneyline odds.

Tommy Paul to Win the First Set Against Miomir Kecmanovic (-180) (Bet $180 to win $100)

Click Here for Paul vs Keckmanovic Odds

With John Isner having already lost at the Australian Open, fellow American Tommy Paul will be looked upon to carry the torch for his country. He is in a great position to do so in a favorable draw for at least the next couple of rounds.

Tonight’s opponent, Miomir Kecmanovic, has not been the quickest starter in his matches. Kecmanovic has lost the first set in eight of his last nine ATP Second Round matches on hard court. While he has the tools to push Paul in this match, we expect the American to build upon his first-ever ATP title win in Stockholm and continue to progress his game, starting with an opening set victory in this match.

Pedro Martinez to Beat Christian Garin (+105) (Bet $100 to win $105)

Click Here for Martinez vs Garin Odds

This should be a competitive match between two opponents, neither of which can claim the hardcourt as their best surface. Garin has won the two previous matchups between them on grass and clay, but we believe Martinez’s game is better suited for the hardcourt between the two. Martinez hits with more pace and should produce more winners with a dominant forehand than Garin. Garin is also coming off a grueling five-set win in his opening match against Facundo Bagnis, and Martinez will exploit that tonight.
