Novak Djokovic vs. Tim van Rijthoven Prediction

Novak Djokovic made it seem like chasing a fourth consecutive Wimbledon title would be laborious, as he dropped a set in his first match and had to work much harder than many predicted against Kwon Soon-woo. However, Djokovic cruised through the next two matches, beating Thanasi Kokkinakis and No. 25 seed Miomir Kecmanovic in straight sets and only dropping 14 games in the process. Djokovic’s serve has only been broken once in the last two matches, and his opponents have had a look at five combined break point chances.

Since Djokovic has made his last two matches look so easy, it is fair to wonder what kind of challenge Tim van Rijthoven can pose today. Less than a month ago, the Netherlands’ van Rijthoven was the 205th-ranked player in the world and did not even have an ATP main-draw match win to his name. However, in that Libema Open, he compounded that win with victories over the top three seeds in the tournament, beating Taylor Fritz, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev.

van Rijthoven is one of the few Men’s players, along with Djokovic, that is undefeated on grass this season. He has beaten two more seeded players on the way to his match with Djokovic and has won all eight grass matches this year. Of how van Rijthoven’s game is suited to the grass surface, Djokovic said, “Big serve, one-handed backhand, uses the slice well. He’s an all-around player. He can play fast; he can also stay in the rally and come to the net.”

Given that van Rijthoven’s rise to relevance has happened so quickly in the last month, we are not expecting him to be comfortable on his biggest stage against one of the most dominant players ever at the All England Club. It may take most of the first set for Djokovic to adapt to van Rijthoven’s unique backhand and slice, but once he gets it figured out, it will be smooth sailing for the No. 1 seed.

The favorite has covered the game spread in each of van Rijthoven’s last three ATP main draw matches, and that is what we expect from this match.
