Nick Kyrgios vs. Cristian Garin Prediction

Nick Kyrgios’ matches at Wimbledon have featured a little bit of everything, from spitting at fans, fines for obscenities, and the Australian being called a “bully” for his tactics on the court. It will be interesting to see what Kyrgios has up his sleeve today in his quarterfinal match against Cristian Garin.

Krygios made his first quarterfinal appearance at Wimbledon for the first time since his debut in 2014. It has not been easy for him to get to this point, as he has endured two grueling five-set matches and what was surely a draining four-set victory (both physical and emotional) against No. 4 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas.

If you thought Garin would be playing in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon this year, you are either a close friend or related to him, or you are a liar. Garin benefitted from Mateo Berrettini’s withdrawal after a positive COVID test, as the Chilean was scheduled to face the tournament’s second-favorite in the first round.

Garin then won as an underdog in the last match against No. 19 seed Alex de Minaur, depriving fans of a quarterfinal match between two Australians. However, even that victory seemed improbable, as Garin won despite dropping the first two sets and saved two match points in the fifth set. He also fell into a 5-3 hole in the fifth-set tiebreak before winning six straight points and the tiebreak 10-6.

Garin’s five-set victory over de Minaur took 4 hours and 34 minutes. While that would typically be something that would put him at a disadvantage when playing another match just 24 hours later, his opponent is also coming off a five-set marathon and even needed treatment on his right shoulder several times in the match.

When Kyrgios is engaged, he is as talented as the best players in the world. However, the Australian tends to lose focus and take points off, especially when trailing in a set.

Garin will have the pressure of playing for his home country, as he is the first Chilean to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal since 2009. But if he can race out to an early lead or even win the first set, it will likely frustrate Kyrgios, and then it is anyone’s guess what we can expect from him the rest of the match.

Garin had never taken a set from de Minaur in any of their previous three matches, so it is clear the Chilean has taken his game to another level here at Wimbledon. It is also reassuring for Garin backers how composed he has been even when down and how well he has played the most pressure-packed points of matches.

Twenty of Garin’s last 25 Grand Slam main draw matches have gone longer than three sets, and four of Kyrgios’ last eight Wimbledon matches have gone five sets. Thus, getting plus-odds on this match to go over 37.5 games looks like a steal, and we will also take a flier on each player to win in five sets at tremendous odds.
