Peter Gojowczyk vs. Nick Kyrgios Prediction

The German Gojowczyk enters this tournament ranked 88th in the world and reached a career-high No. 39 world ranking four years ago. Gojowczyk had to win two qualifying matches just to get into the Atlanta field. He beat American Ernesto Escobedo in three sets and Steve Johnson in straight sets, and now his reward is drawing arguably the hottest competitor in the field in Nick Kyrgios. Gojowczyk lost in the qualifying stage of two of his last seven tournaments and has not advanced past the Round of 16 in any of his other five. In addition, his previous seven exits from singles events have all been straight-set defeats.

Gojowczyk appears to be overmatched here, as Kyrgios has the power to serve him right off the court. Gojowczyk is 1-10 in his last 11 ATP main-draw matches against right-handed opponents and has failed to cover the game spread in eight of his last nine. Kyrgios has made the semifinals or better in four of his previous five tournaments, and we like for him to cruise to an easy victory here.

Mackenzie McDonald vs. Denis Kudla Prediction

Start Time: Tuesday, July 26 - 12:00 pm ET

These two Americans have met just one time in their careers, also on hard court, in a 2021 event in Washington, D.C. McDonald made quick work of Kudla in that match 6-3, 6-2, as he won 81% of his first serve points (25/31) and converted three of his four break-point opportunities. McDonald himself only faced one break point the entire match and had a 205 return of serve rating compared to Kudla’s 59.

Kudla is just 4-11 this season and has not won more than one match in any of his previous five tournaments. Thus, McDonald’s -235 moneyline odds are more than fair, but we are more tempted by his game spread, considering the trends. Kudla has lost the first set in 13 consecutive main draw matches played on US soil, while McDonald is 8-1 in his last nine main draw matches in the US against older opponents.

McDonald easily covered the -3.0 game spread in his previous match against Kudla, and we also like him to cover the -3.5 games here.
