Taro Daniel has not played much tennis this season, as he entered just one tournament (Mallorca) between the French Open and Wimbledon. Another reason Daniel has not played much tennis is the fact that he has been ousted in his opening match in all three of those tournaments and won just two out of eight sets.
Frances Tiafoe has not played since his surprising run to the Round of 16 at Wimbledon. That was Tiafoe’s deepest run at Wimbledon, having never made it past the third round in any of his previous four appearances. His success was even more surprising given that he had lost his first match at four of the last five tournaments he played (Eastbourne, Queen’s Club, Rome, Madrid).
Despite Daniel’s 8-10 record this year, he has covered the game spread in 12 of his 18 matches and owns wins against Andy Murray and Holger Rune this season. Conversely, Tiafoe is 1-5 in his previous six ATP main draw hard court matches against older opponents and did not cover the game spread in any of those. Thus, we expect Daniel to be a tough out in this match.

Ilya Ivashka is having an under-the-radar successful season despite not having many results to show for it, as he lost to Daniil Medvedev in the Netherlands and Halle. Still, each time he pushed the world’s No. 1 ranked player to 23 and 22 total games, respectively. Ivashka also beat four top-50 players in the world in last year’s hard court season and showed his talent by winning the event in Winston Salem.
Conversely, Reilly Opelka has just a 9-6 record on hard court this year but is just 5-6 on outdoor hard as he is 4-0 indoors. Opelka does not come into this tournament in the best form, losing seven of his last ten matches.
Ivashka is somewhat of a hard-court specialist who should not be overlooked in this match. The fact that he is -115 to win this match against the No. 1 seed in this tournament says it all, as oddsmakers are not even viewing this as an “upset” if he beats the American Opelka.
