Ilya Ivashka vs Tommy Paul, Brandon Nakashima vs Frances Tiafoe Prediction and Odds: ATP Atlanta Open
We have reached the quarterfinals of the Atlanta Open, and the field is wide open with just eight players left. Unfortunately, two of the top seeds, and arguably the two most talented players in the tournament, Reilly Opelka and Nick Kyrgios, withdrew with injuries, meaning it could be anyone’s tournament to win. In this article, tennis expert Mike Spector looks at two of his favorite plays for Friday’s action.

Ilya Ivashka vs. Tommy Paul Prediction
Ilya Ivashka was the recipient of some good fortune after Reilly Opelka decided to withdraw from the tournament, as he instead faced American Steve Johnson in the first round. Ivashka no doubt had a better chance of beating Johnson than Opelka, but the fact is that he is still a solid hard-court player who is going to be a tough out in this tournament. Thus, he should not be slighted because things broke his way in the first round.
Ivashka has a .717 winning percentage on hard courts over the last three seasons and faces American Tommy Paul, who has won 15 of his 22 hard court matches this year. Paul has been arguably the most impressive player in this tournament thus far. He made quick work of Jack Sock and Soonwoo Kwon, losing just eight total games in the process. But Ivashka has beaten many highly-ranked players on hard court and will be no pushover.
Ivashka is 10-1 in his last 11 ATP main draw matches on US soil, so I would not put anyone off his +155 moneyline odds. However, the safer play is the over on the number of games in this match, given how impressive Paul has looked.

Brandon Nakashima vs. Frances Tiafoe Prediction
Nakashima and Tiafoe is one of the most anticipated quarterfinal matches, as these two Americans are each talented enough to win this tournament. Tiafoe has the slight edge from a scheduling standpoint as he had to play just one match to Nakashima’s two. However, given that these matches are best of three sets, that advantage is not as significant as it would be if this were a Grand Slam event.
Nakashima beat a pair of Australians in consecutive matches. He ousted Jordan Thompson in three sets in his first match and earned a tidier straight-set victory against John Millman. Thompson has played well in the big points, as evidenced by his 7-5 and 10-8 tie-break victories thus far.
Tiafoe served incredibly well in his first victory over Taro Daniel. He allowed Daniel just three break-point opportunities (Daniel converted one), and Tiafoe won a blistering 87% of his first-serve points. If Tiafoe serves like that again, he will be tough to beat, even if he mixes in five more double faults as he did in the match against Daniel.
Tiafoe has won all three head-to-head matchups against Nakashima on hard court surfaces, all within the last year at Miami, Indian Wells, and Acapulco. Twice Nakashima forced a third set, and given that he is the slight favorite in that match, it suggests oddsmakers are tipping their hands that the fourth time is the charm for him. We like how Nakashima has risen to the occasion in the clutch so far this tournament and trust him to win the bigger points more in this match.
