We are in store for two intriguing matchups at today’s semifinal round of the Atlanta Open. Two of the semifinalists (Alex De Minaur and John Isner) are players that have combined to win three of the last four of these tournaments. Can the other two semifinalists, Ilya Ivashka and Frances Tiafoe, continue their impressive runs and earn a chance to become first-time winners at this event? Or are we destined for a De Minaur-Isner heavyweight final? Tennis expert Mike Spector offers his analysis.

Ilya Ivashka vs. Alex De Minaur Prediction
Alex De Minaur is playing the best tennis of any of the four players left in this tournament, as he is the only one to advance to the fourth round of two of the three Grand Slams. However, while his opponent may not have the same name recognition as the highly-ranked Australian, he will soon become a household name if he keeps up this success on hard courts.
Ilya Ivashka is making his first semifinal appearance of the season (and fifth of his young career), while De Minaur is looking for his first finals appearance in any tournament in 2022. Ivashka entered yesterday’s match against Tommy Paul with a .717 winning percentage on hard courts over the last three seasons and is now 11-1 in his previous 12 ATP main draw matches on U.S. soil.
De Minaur’s three-set victory in the quarterfinals over Adrian Mannarino had more of a “last man standing” feel than him beating an inferior opponent. Mannarino won the first set and nearly broke De Minaur to take an early lead in the second set. However, the Atlanta heat seemingly got the best of the Frenchman, and De Minaur went on to win the final nine games of the match. Had Mannarino not been exhausted from playing his fifth match in seven days, De Minaur might not still be playing in this tournament.
De Minaur is on a six-match winning streak in Atlanta, but he has also failed to cover the game spread in seven of his last eight ATP semifinal appearances against older opponents. Ivashka is more than capable of pulling yet another upset here, especially with the southern heat acting as a great equalizer. However, the safer bet is for Ivashka to cover the game spread on what is his most comfortable surface.

Frances Tiafoe vs. Jenson Brooksby Prediction
Frances Tiafoe earned his first quarterfinal appearance at the Atlanta Open with an impressive straight-set victory over Taro Daniel. He allowed Daniel three break-point opportunities (Daniel converted one) and won a blistering 87% of his first-serve points. However, Tiafoe looked even more impressive in his next straight-set win over Brandon Nakashima.
Tiafoe lost just six total games, was never broken, and only gave Nakashima just one look at a break point the entire match. He won 81% of his first-serve points but improved from 67% to 76% of wins on his second serve in the last two matches and looks every bit a player that can take home his first Atlanta title.
If Tiafoe is going to advance to the finals, he will have to beat a game Jenson Brooksby, who is looking for his maiden ATP title. Brooksby outlasted six-time winner of this event, John Isner, and now is appearing in his third-ever finals. Brooksby has lost in straight sets in each of the other two finals appearances but did not exactly play poorly in those losses, as three of the sets went to tiebreaks.
Brooksby won the only head-to-head meeting between these two, 7-6, 7-5, on the hard court in Washington D.C. in 2021. He had the fourth-best odds to win this tournament before it started, even better odds than No. 1 seed Reilly Opelka had. He is 7-3 against Americans at tour level and we like him to prevail despite playing one extra match in this tournament so far.
