Taylor Fritz vs. Alexei Popyrin, Reilly Opelka vs. Denis Kudla Prediction and Odds: ATP Citi Open

The 53rd Citi Open in Washington D.C. continues on Wednesday, bringing exciting matches with some of the best in the world.

Taylor Fritz vs. Alexei Popyrin Prediction

When: Wednesday, August 3

Start Time: 2:35 pm ET

Taylor Fritz vs Alexei Popyrin Odds

Arguably the most high-profile match of Taylor Fritz’s young career came at Wimbledon when Fritz could not take advantage of a clearly injured Rafael Nadal and lost a five-set battle in the quarterfinals. Fritz is looking to overcome his prior August struggles in preparation for the US Open. He has won just two of his last 11 matches at this event, the Canada Masters and Cincinnati Masters combined. Will improving that poor record be motivation enough to cruise to victory against Alexei Popyrin?

Fritz arguably could not have asked for a better first opponent in this tournament, as Popyrin is just 4-13 on the season and has covered the game spread in three of 16 matches. Popyrin received a break in his first tournament match when Wu Tung-lin withdrew with injury as the match was nodded 3-3 in the first set.

Fritz is 6-0 in his last six ATP main draw matches against right-handed opponents and has won the first set in each of his previous 12 such matches against righties. Popyrin’s inability to cover the game spread often is concerning, but Fritz has not played a tournament since Wimbledon, and the rust will show early.

Reilly Opelka vs. Denis Kudla Prediction

When: Wednesday, August 3

Start Time: 5:15 pm ET

Reilly Opelka vs. Denis Kudla Odds

Denis Kudla grew up in nearby Arlington, Virginia, so he has often thought of playing in the Citi Open as a homecoming. Despite the proximity to where he grew up, Kudla struggled in Washington D.C., going 0-6 in his first six matches before turning it around by winning seven of his last ten.

However, his latest victory was not an easy one, needing three sets to beat Michael Mmoh and making his first serve at just a 47% clip. He does not stand a chance if he serves like that against Reilly Opelka.

Opelka withdrew from last week’s Atlanta Open with a right hip injury, and while that could cause complications later in the tournament, it should not affect him in his opening match. Opelka’s 303.7 serve rating trails only John Isner on the ATP tour, and he will have a decisive serving advantage over Kudla in this match.

Kudla has lost the first set in 15 consecutive ATP main draw matches on US soil, and if he does so again, it could be lights out early against the talented Opelka.
