Tennis expert Mike Spector gives his two best bets for today’s ATP Citi Open Round of 16 in Washington D.C.
ANALYSIS

Grigor Dimitrov vs. Sebastian Korda, Andrey Rublev vs. Maxime Cressy Prediction and Odds: ATP Citi Open

Another exciting day is set to take place at the 53rd Citi Open in Washington DC.

Grigor Dimitrov vs. Sebastian Korda Prediction

When: Thursday, August 4

Start Time: 2:35 pm ET

Grigor Dimitrov vs. Sebastian Korda Odds

If the conditions in Washington, especially for afternoon matches, continue to be this hot and muggy, at some point the players’ fitness levels will matter as much as their talent. That is likely the biggest reason why No. 5 seed Dimitrov is a big underdog to the unseeded Korda, as the 31-year-old Bulgarian is not as fit as many other competitors in this tournament. Korda is nine years younger and is much more likely to hold up well in steamy conditions.

Korda spent much less time on the court yesterday than did Dimitrov, who needed three sets to get by Adrian Mannarino. Dimitrov does not have the best record here, as he is 1-5 in his last six main draw matches at the Citi Open. Dimitrov will want to play quick points, but Korda would be wise to extend the match, and the longer it goes, the more it favors him.

Andrey Rublev vs. Maxime Cressy Prediction

When: Thursday, August 4

Start Time: 7 pm ET

Andrey Rublev vs. Maxime Cressy Odds

No. 1 seed Andrey Rublev looked mighty impressive in his tidy 6-4, 6-2 straight-set victory over Jack Draper. In the hot and humid conditions in D.C. this week, it is essential to wrap up matches as quickly as possible to conserve energy. The most eye-popping statistic from his last match was Rublev winning 24-of-27 first-serve points (89%), and if he serves like that, he will be difficult for anyone to beat this week.

Rublev has struggled against some of the sport’s biggest servers, which is obviously an issue on the hard surface. He has lost four of his last five matches against the highest-ranked servers, including Marin Cilic (French Open), Stefanos Tsitsipas (Madrid), Nick Kyrgios (Miami), and Taylor Fritz (Indian Wells). Thus, a huge server like Max Cressy, who often serves and volleys, can pose tactical issues for Rublev and give him a look he doesn’t often see.

With each player likely to hold serve more often than not, we can envision a few break-points and each set (even if just two are played) going to at least ten games or even tiebreaks. Each of Rublev’s last five ATP main draw matches has gone under the projected game's total, but a big server like Cressy will not bow out as easily.
