ANALYSIS

Andy Murray vs. Taylor Fritz, Denis Shapovalov vs. Alex De Minaur Prediction and Odds: ATP Montreal

The ATP Montreal Masters (or National Bank Open) has an absolutely loaded field with seven of the top ten players in the world competing for a title. All will be out to dethrone defending champion and World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev, who not only won last year’s championship but also made the finals the last time the tournament was played before that in 2019.

To prove how deep the field in this tournament is, one of today’s first-round matches is between two players ranked in the top 22 in the world, but both are unseeded players in this event. We preview the opening round matchup between Denis Shapovalov and Alex de Minaur and the match between Andy Murray and Taylor Fritz in this article.

Andy Murray vs. Taylor Fritz Prediction

Andy Murray had a disappointing exit in the Round of 64 at the Citi Open in a three-set loss to Mikael Ymer last Monday. The only consolation to that loss was that Murray got ample time to rest for this tournament and has fresher legs than Taylor Fritz, who was ousted three days later in the Round of 16 by Daniel Evans.

Murray is just 10-9 on hard courts this year, and a big reason for his near .500 record is that he has won merely 75.9% (173 of 228) of his service games. That number needs to improve against Fritz, who has won 83.9% of his hard-court service games this season. Fritz is 14-5 on the hard surface this year and also claimed a title at Indian Wells in one of his six events.

Fritz has won the first set in his last 13 completed ATP main draw matches against right-handed opponents and has covered the game spread in nine of his last ten overall. Considering that Fritz also has better return-of-serve numbers and that Murray ranks 112th in break-point percentage conversions, we expect Fritz to win this match in straight sets.

Denis Shapovalov vs Alex De Minaur Prediction

Denis Shapovalov and Alex De Minaur are coming off disappointing three-set losses in their opening-round matches in Washington DC. However, at least in De Minaur’s case, he lost to the eventual runner-up, Yoshihito Nishioka.

Shapovalov has had to work much harder in his three-set matches this year, as he has played an average of 25.4 games per match compared to De Minaur’s 22.9. De Minaur also possesses much better return numbers, winning 30.9% of his return games, compared to Shapovalov’s 20.9%. Thus, we expect Shapovalov to let De Minaur off the hook more often than not if the Australian does not have his best stuff serve-wise, which should lead to a longer match.

Shapovalov is in terrible form, having lost eight of his last nine ATP main draw matches, but we expect the Canadian to compete better on his home soil. Considering this match has a great chance to go three sets, we love the value the over in total games presents.

Denis Shapovalov and Alex De Minaur Pick

PICK: Shapovalov-De Minaur OVER 23.5 Games (-110) (Bet $110 to win $100)
