Tennis expert Mike Spector previews the heavyweight battle between Daniil Medvedev vs. Nick Kyrgios and a more under-the-radar match that should be highly entertaining between Jack Draper and Stefanos Tsitsipas at ATP Montreal on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS

Daniil Medvedev vs. Nick Kyrgios, Jack Draper vs. Stefanos Tsitsipas Prediction and Odds: ATP Montreal

In arguably the best second-round match you will see in any ATP tournament this year, world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev faces the red-hot Nick Kyrgios, who is having one of the most successful seasons of any men’s player on tour to this point.

Who did the top-ranked player in the world tick off to draw Australian Nick Kyrgios in the second round? Kyrgios is coming off a dominant Citi Open title in Washington DC last week, where he did not have his serve broken once. In addition, Kyrgios has had success against Medvedev, winning two of their three head-to-head matchups, though Medvedev won their latest meeting at the Australian Open in four sets. In the other two matchups, Kyrgios had to work hard with a straight-set victory that required wins in two tiebreaks and a grueling three-set victory on clay in Rome in 2019.

Kyrgios has won 18 of his last 21 singles matches and is 11-1 in his previous 12. While there is no denying that this is the best stretch of his career, Medvedev looks in peak form, and it will take a concentrated and clean performance to beat him. Given how well Kyrgios has been serving of late, we expect him to win at least one set. But Medvedev’s -200 moneyline odds are more than fair, making the value play for this match to go the distance.

Jack Draper vs. Stefanos Tsitsipas Prediction

Jack Draper quickly ousted Hugo Gaston 6-2, 6-3 yesterday, but he will need to play much better tennis if he is to pull an upset over world No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas. Draper had just a 59% first serve percentage against Gaston and won just 50% of his second serve points. His saving grace was that he broke Gaston five times, but that is not likely to happen with a player like Tsitsipas’ caliber, as he has won 86.4% of his service games on hard courts. The draw sets up nicely for the Greek to do well in this tournament, starting with a convincing win over Draper.

Tsitsipas benefits from this match being played at night in cooler conditions, as it will slow the playing conditions, which takes away any advantage the big-hitting Draper may have. Tsitsipas is 16-6 on hard courts this year, and we look for him to record a 17th win in dominating fashion tonight.
