ANALYSIS

Casper Ruud vs. Felix Auger-Aliassime, Daniel Evans vs. Tommy Paul Prediction and Odds: ATP Montreal

The upsets continued in yesterday’s Round of 16 at the National Bank Open, as just three seeded players, none seeded higher than fourth, are left in the quarterfinals. With how this tournament has played out, we are guaranteed one first-time finalist from the bottom half of the draw.

We focus on one of those matches in the bottom half, as Daniel Evans takes on the lone remaining American in the field, Tommy Paul. We also preview the only quarterfinal match between two seeded players, as No. 4 Casper Ruud faces No. 6 Felix Auger-Aliassime. Will the upsets continue in Montreal today?

Casper Ruud vs. Felix Auger-Aliassime Prediction

Casper Ruud faces many disadvantages in today’s match against Felix Auger-Aliassime, one of which is how fresher the Canadian’s legs will be after yesterday’s matches. Auger-Aliassime defeated Cameron Norrie 6-3, 6-4 in a tidy one hour and 12 minutes, while Ruud had to deal with a thunderstorm delay on top of a grueling three-set victory 6-7, 7-6, 6-4 over Roberto Bautista Agut.

In addition, Auger-Aliassime has the home turf advantage, as the partisan crowd has buoyed him to this point. He became the first Quebec player to reach the quarterfinals in Montreal and does not want to end his run here. The Canadian is serving well enough to beat anyone right now and is coming off a performance where he hit 15 aces and made 85% (39-of-46) first serves. Per ShotQuality data, FAA has a serve quality metric of 9.4 this week, up 1.4 points from his hard-court average earlier this year. Thus, he will be too much for the clay-court specialist Ruud to handle.

Daniel Evans vs. Tommy Paul Prediction

This is the first-ever meeting between the veteran Daniel Evans and Tommy Paul, which is important given Evans’ unique style. Paul is undoubtedly the more powerful and aggressive player in this match, which is usually a good recipe for winning on hard court. However, Evans is adept at counterpunching and using opponents’ aggressiveness against them, which is not something we expect the young 25-year-old Paul to handle well.

Evans beautifully neutralized the power of fellow American Taylor Fritz in the last round, his second straight tournament beating him. Evans showed his tough mettle against Fritz as he broke the American down 3-5 as Fritz was serving for the first set. And in the third set, Evans’ confidence easily could have been rattled after being broken while serving for the match at 5-4. However, he broke Fritz right back and closed it out 7-5.

Paul will undoubtedly feel some nerves with this being his first ATP 1000 quarterfinal, and we expect Evans to take full advantage.
