ANALYSIS

Casper Ruud vs. Hubert Hurkacz, Daniel Evans vs. Pablo Carreno Busta Prediction and Odds: ATP Montreal

Today’s semifinals at the National Bank Open have two highly seeded and highly ranked players in one match and two unseeded players looking for their first-ever ATP Masters title. No. 4 seed Casper Ruud looks to continue his stellar hard-court season against No. 8 seed Hubert Hurkacz, while unseeded Pablo Carreno Busta and Daniel Evans look to overcome lofty pre-tournament odds to take home the title.

Hurkacz is the only remaining player of the four to have ever won an ATP Masters title. Will he advance, or will we have a championship match between two players looking for their maiden victory?

Hubert Hurkacz did what not many people thought he could do in handing Nick Kyrgios just his second loss in the last 17 matches. Kyrgios has been on quite the run over the summer, as his only other loss was against Djokovic in the Wimbledon final in that span.

As per usual in Kyrgios matches, his defeat came with a bit of controversy, citing Hurkacz’s lengthy bathroom break before the third set began as a reason why his body stiffened up, and he did not feel right physically at the end of the match. However, that should not detract from a terrific performance by Hurkacz, who is now 31-13 on the season.

Ruud is appearing in his third ATP semifinal of the season. He benefited from 25 unforced errors from Felix Auger-Aliassime in their quarterfinal match, and his 74-minute victory had him on the court for 32 fewer minutes than Hurkacz last round. With a win today, Ruud would improve to 11-3 on hard courts this season.

It would behoove Ruud to win the first set in this match, as Hurkacz has won 28 of his 29 matches this year in which he has won the first set. We look for him to do just that, as the Kyrgios match likely took a lot out of Hurkacz’s legs.

Daniel Evans vs. Pablo Carreno Busta Prediction

This is the first-ever meeting between veterans Daniel Evans and Pablo Carreno Busta. Evans has used counterpunching and playing off his opponents’ aggressiveness to get to this point, while Carreno Busta has played a perfect blend of aggressive but intelligent tennis.

Arguably no player remaining has been more impressive than Carreno Busta in this tournament, as he has beaten all four of his opponents in straight sets and lost just 21 games total in the process.

Carreno Busta has gotten off to fast starts of late, winning the first set in each of his last nine ATP main draw matches on hard court. In addition, he has covered the game spread in each of his previous six such matches, and we expect him to be too much for the crafty Evans tonight.
