ANALYSIS

Mikael Ymer vs. Federico Coria, Dominic Thiem vs. Jeffrey John Wolf Predictions: ATP Winston-Salem

The ATP Winston Salem event is the last hard-court tune-up tournament before the U.S. Open. Because it is so close to a Grand Slam event, most of the world’s top-ranked players choose to skip it in preparation for the major. Nonetheless, this year’s field has many players capable of winning matches at Flushing Meadows next week, and we will relish the opportunity to get more looks at these players this week.

Tennis expert Mike Spector weighs in with his best bets from Monday’s ATP Winston Salem first round.

Mikael Ymer vs. Federico Coria Prediction

One name to keep in mind for next week is Mikael Ymer, who is certainly capable of winning a couple of matches at the U.S. Open. Ymer flashed his potential in Washington D.C., winning matches against Andy Murray and Sebastian Korda before losing to eventual champion Nick Kyrgios in the semifinals. He can be forgiven in that match, as he had clearly run out of gas, but he still pushed Kyrgios to a first-set tiebreak and made him work for everything he got.

Ymer knows what it takes to win at Winston-Salem after making the finals last year. He draws a clay-court specialist Federico Coria in the first round, and Coria has lost the first set in seven of his previous eight ATP main draw matches. In addition, Ymer has covered the game spread in eight of his last ten matches on U.S. soil against older opponents and will win this match easily.

Dominic Thiem vs. Jeffrey John Wolf Prediction

Dominic Thiem is the most accomplished player in the Winston-Salem field, making four Grand Slam finals and winning the 2020 U.S. Open. However, he has plummeted down the world rankings after missing over a year with wrist and other injuries and has been limited to just 16 matches this year.

This is Thiem’s first match in over a month, so fitness will definitely be a concern here. So too will his opponent, as Jeffrey John Wolf made an impressive run to the quarterfinals in Washington D.C., beating the likes of Holger Rune and Denis Shapovalov in the early rounds. Wolf’s return of serve was on point in the Citi Open, breaking his opponents’ serve 13 times through the first three matches, and he could be a thorn in Thiem’s side if he is not careful.

Thiem has been a slow starter, losing the first set in each of his last five ATP main draw matches on hard court. He is a live underdog in this match, but with the lack of competitive tennis in recent weeks, we expect him to start slow once again.
