In arguably the most "coin flip" match of the tournament thus far, Steve Johnson meets Richard Gasquet in the Round of 16. Gasquet is coming off one of the more impressive upsets of the tournament, downing No. 5 seed Lorenzo Musetti 7-6, 4-6, 6-1, and looking the far fresher player in the third set. Meanwhile, many thought Johnson should have been seeded in this field, and he has played like it, winning two matches in straight sets, the latter against No. 12 Pedro Martinez.
This is an interesting match as cases can be made for both sides. Gasquet leads the 2-1 head-to-head series, and both wins came on hard surfaces, but they have not met since 2016. He has also been the more successful player on hard court throughout his career. Still, Johnson has succeeded in this tournament, finishing runner-up once and making the semifinals on two other occasions.
Twelve of Johnson's last 13 matches at Winston-Salem have gone under the projected total, but with how evenly these two players are matched, we are bucking that trend and siding with the over.

For the third time this tournament, Dominic Thiem, who has had the most successful career of any player in this tournament, is an underdog. That speaks to how far off from peak form he is, yet he continues to grind out wins, although he was fortunate that Grigor Dimitrov retired from their last match after Thiem had lost the first set 0-6.
Jack Draper is a worthy favorite, as it appears he is rounding into peak form while steadily climbing the world rankings. Draper is 8-4 on hard courts this year and has been particularly strong in his return game, winning 28.6% of games where he returned serve.
Thiem is on a nine-match winning streak in ATP main draw matches in the United States but has also lost the first set in each of his last seven completed matches. If he does so against a player like Draper, he will not be able to recover.
