Sebastian Baez vs. Carlos Alcaraz Prediction

Carlos Alcaraz was a huge unknown last year when he beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third round at last year’s U.S. Open. However, if fans could foresee the caliber of player he would become in just one short year, that win would not have been considered an upset by any stretch of the imagination.

Alcaraz set the all-time record earlier this year for most wins (75) of any men’s player in his first 100 matches. He has won four titles this year, including two ATP Masters 1000 events, and this could be the year he advances to his first semifinal at a Grand Slam.

Sebastian Baez, though unseeded, will prove to be a stern test. He does enter on a six-match losing streak, with three consecutive straight-set losses to Taylor Fritz, Nick Kyrgios, and Sebastian Korda. However, he has won at least one match in each of his last three majors, and while Alcaraz is not in danger of losing, he should not be anywhere near a -20000 favorite against a player that has been ranked in the top 40 in the world.

Sam Querrey vs. Ilya Ivashka Prediction

Sam Querrey has lost back-to-back matches in straight sets and enters this event on a three-match losing streak. He is a massive underdog against Ilya Ivashka, who has won a hard-court title in his career at last year’s Winston-Salem event. Ivashka also made an impressive run to the semifinals in Atlanta this year, eventually falling to Alex De Minaur after beating Americans, Steve Johnson and Tommy Paul.

Querrey has played just 13 matches this year, so the younger Ivashka is clearly the more in-form player. However, Ivashka is just 16-17 this year (albeit due to a demanding schedule), and Querrey has a dominant enough serve to get one of the sets to a tiebreak, so we will take our chances that the American will not lose in straight sets.

Jack Sock vs. Diego Schwartzman Prediction

American Jack Sock nearly did not have a place at this year’s U.S. Open, as he needed a withdrawal from fellow countryman Reilly Opelka to be eligible to play. However, now that his name has been inserted into the draw, he immediately becomes a threat to the No. 14 seed Diego Schwartzman.

The U.S. Open is clearly trying to draw on the ratings by having Sock play one of the last scheduled matches of the day on Tuesday. If you have ever watched a U.S. Open, you would know the New York crowd can get pretty lively late at night, and thus, Sock will be able to draw on the support from the crowd that should spur him on in full force.

Schwartzman has twice before reached the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open, but Sock’s powerful serve should play well in the quick conditions.

Schwartzman is 18-1 in his last 19 first-round Grand Slam matches, so perhaps he is not as vulnerable to an upset as his -195 moneyline odds suggest. However, Sock’s contrast of style to his makes him a tricky underdog, and one that will at least win one set off him.
