Ruud vs. van Rijthoven, Paul vs. Korda Predictions, Picks, Odds: US Open Second Round
To this point, the most shocking upset in the men’s draw at the US Open was American and No. 10 seed Taylor Fritz losing his first-round match, as many thought he had a favorable enough draw to win his quarter. Wednesday’s action is loaded with even more compelling matches, and tennis expert Mike Spector weighs in with his best bets for the second round at the US Open.

Tim van Rijthoven vs. Casper Ruud Prediction
No. 5 seed Casper Ruud made quick work of his first-round opponent, beating Kyle Edmund in straight sets and breaking his opponent’s serve six times. Ruud is one of the hottest players on tour, elevating his game to being one of the favorites in this tournament, and he continues to play for a possible No. 1 world ranking at some point.
That said, Wednesday’s opponent is no pushover, even though he needed to climb back from a two-sets-to-none deficit to win his first match. If you know the name Tim van Rijthoven, it is because he won the ‘s-Hertogenbosch tournament back in June and beat the likes of Taylor Fritz, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Daniil Medvedev in that run. He also made a name for himself in his Round of 16 surprise run at Wimbledon and has proved he belongs on the court with the best in the world.
Given his successes, this season, van Rijthoven’s +500 odds look a bit odd. However, he has played just 11 matches this year (9-2), while Ruud has gained much more valuable experience at Montreal and Cincinnati since Wimbledon. So while a van Rijthoven upset would not shock me in the slightest, his lack of match experience prevents me from backing his moneyline odds. However, we are delighted to get behind his game spread, as he has covered nine of his 11 matches this year.

Tommy Paul vs. Sebastian Korda Prediction
Oddsmakers are tipping their hand that they believe Sebastian Korda will advance, favoring the unseeded player over the No. 29 seed, Tommy Paul. Paul is coming off his first-ever U.S. Open win, but it was not as easy as he would have preferred, as it took five sets to outlast Bernabe Zapata Miralles. That is a microcosm of his inconsistency, as he also owns four top-10 wins this year against Rublev, Berrettini, Zverev, and Alcaraz.
Korda is also making his first appearance in the second round at U.S. Open and will draw from the experience of his 3-0 head-to-head record against Paul to try and advance further. Korda’s style of relentlessly attacking the net and using his above-average volleying skills makes Paul uncomfortable, as he would much prefer to trade baseline blows and rely on his massive forehand for winners.
Paul won at least one set in each of the two hard-court matches against Korda, and with this coin-flip match being played at a major, we would not be shocked if it went the distance. One could back the match to go five sets on a three-way set wager (choosing the match to be finished in three, four, or five sets). However, the better value is to back both players’ odds to win three sets to two.
Tommy Paul vs. Sebastian Korda Picks
- Tommy Paul to win 3 Sets to 2 (+600) (Bet $100 to Win $600)
- Sebastian Korda to win 3 Sets to 2 (+550) (Bet $100 to Win $550)
