Isner vs Rune, Dimitrov vs Nakashima Predictions, Picks, Odds: US Open Second Round

By the end of Thursday’s action, we will be set for the third round at the Men's US Open entering the weekend.

Compared to Wednesday’s play, Thursday is jampacked with several more manageable matches from a betting perspective, as moneylines are not as egregious, and one does not have to get too creative with their plays. Thus, tennis expert Mike Spector weighs in with his two best moneyline wagers for Thursday’s second-round action at the U.S. Open.

John Isner vs. Holger Rune Prediction

This is the first-ever meeting between John Isner and Holger Rune, as the young third-year pro will get his first look at Isner’s powerful serve. Rune has had an up-and-down year, winning just 18 of his 38 matches despite being the No. 28 seed in this tournament. Rune mightily benefitted from his first-round draw of Peter Gojowyzck, a player who had won just three matches this year. However, he is not so fortunate with today’s draw, as Isner is a menace on hard court and will have the full crowd support.

Conditions will not be as hot on Thursday as early in the week when most daytime matches were played in 90+ degree heat. That should help the bigger Isner from wearing down physically, though he prefers to play quick points anyway.

Isner is 14-1 in his previous 15 second-round ATP matches against right-handed opponents and has covered the game spread in eight of his last nine second-round matches at the U.S. Open. Thus, the American is a worthy favorite, and we expect him to advance to the third round.

John Isner vs. Holger Rune Pick

PICK: John Isner ML (+170) (Bet $100 to Win $170)

Grigor Dimitrov vs. Brandon Nakashima Start Time, Where to Watch, and Odds

Grigor Dimitrov vs. Brandon Nakashima Prediction

Brandon Nakashima has elevated his play in his last two Grand Slam appearances. He followed up a third-round appearance at the French Open with a run to the Round of 16 at Wimbledon, which at the time, were each his two best results in majors. Thus, we expect that trend to continue on Thursday, and Nakashima is a live underdog against Grigor Dimitrov.

Nakashima was able to conserve energy in quickly advancing in straight sets against Pavel Kotov, who had just one ATP tour main draw win in his career. The longer this match against the older Dimitrov goes, the more it will favor Nakashima.

The American’s serve has improved mightily throughout his young career, and he allowed Kotov just three break chances in their opening match. Dimitrov easily beat Nakashima 6-3, 6-4 on clay in Rome earlier this year, but Nakashima far prefers the hard surface, and it will show today.

Nakashima has covered the game spread in eight consecutive Grand Slam matches, but we expect him to do more than cover a ninth straight. We expect him to win outright.

Grigor Dimitrov vs. Brandon Nakashima Pick

PICK: Brandon Nakashima ML (+125) (Bet $100 to Win $125)
