Founded in 1925, the New York Giants are the fourth oldest team in the NFL. Playing its inaugural season at the Polo Grounds in New York, the team now plays at MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ. However, the Giants franchise is still strongly affiliated with New York. 

The Big Blue have won four pre-AFL/NFL merger NFL Championships and four Super Bowls. The Giants, also known as the “G-Men”, have also won 11 conference championships and 16 divisional titles.

Founded as the Titans of New York in 1959 to compete in the inaugural AFL season, the New York Jets was the first team from the AFL to win Super Bowl III in 1968. Star quarterback Joe Namath famously “guaranteed” that his team would beat the heavily favored Baltimore Colts.

This remains its only Super Bowl win, although the Jets have won the AFL East on two occasions, in 1968 and 1969, and the AFC East twice, in 1998 and 2002. The franchise shares a home arena with the New York Giants and plays at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Founded in 1960 as a charter member of the AFL, the NFL’s Buffalo Bills draw much of its support from Western New York, playing out of Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo.

Despite having a successful early history, winning the AFL in 1964 and 1965 under the guidance of legendary coach Lou Saban, the Bills have yet to win a Super Bowl since the 1970 merger. However, the team did win four consecutive AFC Championships in the early 1990s but would go on to lose all four subsequent Super Bowls. Throughout history, the Bills have collected 12 divisional titles.

The New York Knickerbockers were a founder member of the Basketball Association of America, which became the NBA in 1949. The team is one of three charter members still playing in the NBA, along with the Boston Celtics and the Golden State Warriors. The Knicks play at Madison Square Garden and have won 2 NBA Championships in 1970 and 1973, four conference titles, and eight divisional titles.

Initially started as the New Jersey Americans in the American Basketball Association (ABA) in 1967, the Nets have moved between New York and New Jersey several times. After its purchase by a consortium including the rapper Jay-Z, the New Jersey Nets announced a move to Brooklyn in 2012 and were renamed the Brooklyn Nets, playing out of the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

The team won two ABA Championships but has yet to win an NBA Championship. However, the franchise has claimed five divisional titles in its history – one in the ABA and four in the NBA.

The New York Yankees were founded in 1903 as the representative of New York in the newly formed American League for baseball. With more national championships than any other team in major league professional sports, the Yankees are also the most successful sports team in the MLB, winning 27 World Series. The team has also won 40 American League Pennants and 20 AL East Titles along the way.

On the way to winning so many World Series, the Pinstripers have hosted some of baseball’s most iconic figures, like Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, and Mickey Mantle.

The New York Mets were founded in 1962 to fill the baseball void in New York after the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants relocated to Los Angeles and San Francisco in 1957. The team took its name from a baseball team in New York that played between 1880 and 1887. The team initially played at the Polo Grounds before moving to Shea Stadium in 1964 and Citi Field in 2009.

The team became known as the “miracle Mets” on the way to winning a World Series in 1969 by beating the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles. However, the franchise would only go on to claim one more World Series in 1986. The team has also won five National League Pennants and six divisional titles.

A part of the “Original Six” NHL teams that made up the league from 1942 until the 1967 expansion, the Rangers play at the iconic Madison Square Garden. The franchise has won four Stanley Cups, with the most recent triumph in 1993/94 coming 44 years after its previous win in 1940. The team has also won the President’s Trophy three times, two conference titles, and seven divisional titles.

The New York Islanders are based in Long Island and compete in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference of the NHL, joining the league as an expansion side in 1972. When the team was founded, it played at the Nassau Coliseum until 2015, when it moved to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The team moved again to its current home at UBS Arena in 2021.

The Islanders became a dynasty in the 1980s, winning four consecutive Stanley Cups from 1980 to 1983. The franchise has also collected six conference championships and six divisional titles.

Established in 1970, the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres are one of two major league franchises based in Western New York, along with the Buffalo Bills of the NFL. The Sabres’ home games have been held at the KeyBank Center since 1996, but the team previously played at the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium.

The Sabres have yet to win a Stanley Cup but have reached the Finals on two occasions, in 1975 and 1999. While the biggest trophy in ice hockey has eluded the franchise, it has won six divisional titles and a Presidents’ Trophy in 2007.

Owned by a collaboration between the English soccer team Manchester City and the local baseball franchise, the New York Yankees, New York City FC was founded in 2013. Playing at Yankee Stadium, the team has a history of recruiting star names like World Cup winners David Villa and Andrea Pirlo. The franchise is a part of the City Football Group, which owns soccer teams in South America, Australia, Japan, and Europe.

New York City won its first MLS Cup in 2021 after winning the Supporters Shield in 2017 and 2019. The team built on its first MLS Cup victory with a triumph over Liga MX side Atlas Futbol Club in the 2022 Campeones Cup. 

Owned by the majority holder of the Brooklyn Nets, the New York Liberty compete in the Eastern Conference of the WNBA. The Liberty plays its home games at the Barclays Center and was an inaugural member of the WNBA upon its founding in 1997. Featuring well-known players such as Teresa Weatherspoon, Beck Hammon, and Tina Charles, the Liberty have won three conference titles but have yet to win a Championship.

A founding member of MLS in 1994, the New York Red Bulls were founded as the New York/New Jersey Metrostars. In 2006, the club was taken over by Red Bull GmbH and became the Red Bulls, joining the Red Bull family of soccer teams, including RB Leipzig of the German Bundesliga and Red Bull Salzburg in Austria.

The Red Bulls play at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey but haven’t won an MLS Cup. The team reached its first MLS Cup Final in 2008 but lost to Columbus Crew. However, the Red Bulls have won the Supporters Shield on three occasions.

The Red Storm represents St. John’s University in the NCAA Division I Big East Conference. The school has 17 varsity programs competing, including basketball, fencing, golf, soccer, and lacrosse. The men’s soccer team claimed the only national championship for the college in 1996, beating Florida International University 4-1 in the final. In 2006, the program became the first soccer team from the US to be invited to Vietnam.

As a member of the Ivy League, the Columbia Lions compete in a massive 31 different varsity sports against other Ivy League schools. However, its rowing program is part of the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges, wrestling to the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association, and squash the College Squash Association.

Famous alums from Columbia include Hall of Fame quarterback Sid Luckman and Olympic wrestling silver medal winner Nat Pendleton.

There are 37 varsity sports supported by Cornell University, including sprint football, polo, and fencing. The men’s ice hockey team is the most famous program, claiming two national championships in 1967 and 1970. The men’s lacrosse team has also excelled, with three NCAA championships in 1971, 1976, and 1977.

As a member of the MAC, the Buffalo Bills have only claimed one NCAA Division I national championship. In 2015, Jonathan Jones won the shot put with a throw of 20.78m. In addition, the Bulls wrestling program has won NCAA Division II and Division III national championships.

While there are 19 varsity teams sponsored by Manhattan College, the track and field program is the pride of the school. The team claimed the Jaspers only NCAA national championship in 1973, making it the smallest school to claim this honor. The team was powered by 1972 Olympians Anthony Colon and Michael Keogh.

The Army Black Knights football program plays in one of the most famous college sports rivalries in the US, facing the Navy Midshipmen. The program has also been declared national champions three times, in 1944, 1945, and 1946. The men and women’s handball teams have also seen a lot of success, winning 35 men’s titles and 20 women’s.

While Fordham University may not be an Ivy league team, many believe the school helped create the nickname. Stanley Woodward referred to the football team as an “ivy college” in the New York Tribune in 1933. The football team has played in several notable bowl games, including the Sugar Bowl.

A member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Syracuse Orange has found a lot of success in NCAA team national championships. Lacrosse is the standout program, with ten national championships. IN addition, the school has picked up titles in basketball, boxing, cross country, and soccer.
