Cheltenham is widely considered to be the home of National Hunt racing, with its March festival the undoubted highlight of the jumps season. Two main courses are situated within Prestbury Park, known as the 'old' and 'new' courses. The old course hosts the November meeting and first two days of the festival, with the new course used for the December meeting and festival days 3 and 4. Inside the two lies a cross country course, which is used for several races a year.
The track is an undulating, galloping test, with a downhill run from around half a mile out. The final 300 yards or so are all uphill, and can change the complexion of a race dramatically, so stamina is at a premium.
