4 Minute ReadNebraska Senate Election Odds: Pete Ricketts Holds Lead Over Independent Dan Osborn
Nebraska's Senate race enters Election Day with Republican Pete Ricketts holding a 71% market-implied chance of victory, compared with 30% for independent challenger Dan Osborn. The market has remained relatively stable throughout October, with Ricketts maintaining prices near 70% and Osborn generally trading between 25% and 35%, despite a competitive polling environment.
The race has drawn national attention because of Osborn's unconventional political background and his ability to compete in a state Donald Trump carried by more than 20 percentage points in 2024. With no Democratic nominee on the general-election ballot, Osborn has attempted to build a coalition of independents, Democrats and disaffected Republicans against one of Nebraska's most established political figures.

Nebraska Senate Prediction Market
Pete Ricketts: 71% Chance
Ricketts enters Election Day with a 71% market-implied chance of securing another Senate term, maintaining a substantial advantage throughout the final month of the campaign. His price has fluctuated primarily between 65% and 75% since early October, with little sustained movement despite several public polls showing a much closer contest against Osborn.
The former Nebraska governor was appointed to the Senate in 2023 following Ben Sasse's resignation and subsequently won a special election in 2024. Ricketts previously served two terms as governor from 2015 through 2023, giving him extensive statewide political experience and established relationships within Nebraska's Republican electorate.
His campaign has emphasized tax relief, border security, agricultural policy and support for the Trump administration's economic agenda. Ricketts has also received prominent Republican endorsements, including Trump's backing, while highlighting his work on issues affecting Nebraska's farmers, ranchers and rural communities.
However, the relatively narrow polling margins represent a different challenge from the Republican Party's recent statewide victories. Ricketts is running against an independent candidate who has demonstrated an ability to attract voters across traditional party lines, making the composition of the electorate particularly important to the final result.
Dan Osborn: 30% Chance
Osborn is priced at 30%, having spent much of October fluctuating around the upper 20s and low 30s. His market-implied chance briefly climbed toward 40% during the final days of October before retreating, leaving the independent challenger with substantially lower market pricing than Ricketts despite competitive polling.
The former Navy veteran and industrial mechanic gained national recognition during his independent Senate campaign against Republican Deb Fischer in 2024. Osborn lost that election by approximately six percentage points, a significantly narrower margin than Trump's statewide presidential victory, establishing him as an unusual political figure in a traditionally Republican state.
Osborn's campaign has emphasized economic affordability, organized labor, government accountability and opposition to excessive corporate influence in Washington. His background as a union leader during the 2021 Kellogg's strike in Omaha has been central to his political identity, allowing him to frame the campaign around working-class concerns rather than traditional Democratic or Republican positions.
His independent status has also shaped the race's unusual political dynamics. Nebraska Democrats declined to nominate a replacement after Cindy Burbank withdrew from the general election, leaving Osborn as the principal challenger to Ricketts without requiring him to run under a Democratic Party label.
Nebraska Senate Polling and Election Outlook
Nebraska's late polling has shown a much closer race than the prediction-market percentages suggest. An October survey measured Ricketts and Osborn tied at 49%, while another showed Ricketts ahead 49% to 43%, illustrating the variation between likely-voter samples. The market's displayed Republican margin forecast of approximately 2.5 percentage points also reflects a much narrower expected vote margin than the 71%-30% contract pricing might initially suggest.
The state's Republican voting history remains important context. Trump carried Nebraska by approximately 20 points in 2024, while Republicans have controlled both Senate seats for more than a decade, making Osborn's ability to compete as an independent particularly notable.
Osborn's 2024 campaign offers another useful comparison, as he substantially outperformed the Democratic presidential ticket while challenging Fischer. His ability to attract independent and Republican-leaning voters has helped distinguish his campaigns from conventional Democratic Senate efforts in the state.
The absence of a Democratic candidate on the ballot also reduces the possibility of a major-party challenger dividing the anti-Ricketts vote. However, several minor-party candidates remain in the contest, adding another variable in a race where polling has shown relatively narrow margins.
Turnout in Omaha and Lincoln will be particularly important, alongside Republican performance throughout rural Nebraska and the state's smaller communities. Osborn's support among working-class and independent voters, combined with Ricketts' established Republican base, will help determine how closely the final result matches the late polling.
With more than $7.3 million in reported market trading volume, Nebraska has developed into one of the more closely watched independent Senate campaigns of the election cycle. The market continues to price Ricketts at 71% against Osborn's 30%, but the tighter polling margins make the actual distribution of Election Day votes an important test of those expectations.
