Money Line Explained

Money line bets are one of the simplest wagers you can place. You simply choose the winner of the game or championship and you win the bet if your choice is correct. At Oddschecker, we compare odds for all the basketball lines in the NBA and the NCAAB.

For money line bets, the odds are expressed as numbers with either a + or a - sign in front. A - sign shows you that that team is the favorite, whilst the + shows you that the team is the underdog. For example:

Toronto Raptors -200

New Orleans Pelicans +220

In this scenario, the Toronto Raptors are the favorites, whilst the New Orleans Pelicans are the underdogs. For every $200 bet on the Toronto Raptors, a winning bet will pay out $100 (plus your original stake), whilst for every $100 bet on the New Orleans Pelicans will yield $220 (plus the $100 bet).

Points Spread Explained

Points spread bets are the most popular kind of wager placed by sports fans. They create an equalizer for bookmakers and are used to give both teams an almost equal chance of winning, regardless of their actual ability to win.

When comparing odds for points spread bets, you will notice a number next to the team name, this is the points spread, and it is represented by either a + or a - sign. Again, the - shows the favorite and the + shows the underdog.

New Orleans Pelicans +7.5

Toronto Raptors -3.5

In this scenario, a points spread bet for the Toronto Raptors would mean they would need to win by at least 4 points for you to win the bet, whilst a bet on the New Orleans Pelicans would pay out if they win the game, or lose by less than 7 points. Odds for these points spread bets are typically expressed in the same way as money lines.

Over/Under Explained

An over/under bet (sometimes called a totals bet) is one where you bet on whether the total points scored in a game will be more or less than the number given by the bookmaker. Here you are not betting for a specific team, but on the game as a whole. The bookmaker will give you a number and the option to place a wager on over or under, you then win the bet if you predict correctly between the two options. Odds are typically expressed in the same way as money line bets.

Similar to over/under bets, we compare odds on other total score bets too. For example, you can pick whether the score will be an odd or an even number. These bets can be placed on the whole game, or by the end of a particular quarter.

What Is March Madness?

March Madness is the aptly named time of the year that reflects the excitement amongst basketball fans as 68 college teams compete in the annual NCAA basketball tournament. The single-elimination tournament is played over three weekends, with each game played on a neutral ground.

After the first weekend, only 16 teams remain in what is known as the “Sweet Sixteen”. The second weekend then halves the field down to the “Elite Eight” and then the “Final Four”, deciding the line-up for the semi-finals which are hosted on weekend three. The winners of these semi-finals go on to play in the national championship game.

Sports fans remain glued to their televisions and the internet to keep on top of the scores of each game, in the hope that their predictions are correct. Many take part in March Madness brackets, where they complete a large form that predicts the winner of each of the tournament’s games, following the path of each team through to the final. Brackets have helped March Madness to become one of the most popular sporting events in the US.

When Is March Madness?

March Madness, which is often called the Big Dance, is held every year in Spring. Although it has March in its name, the tournament regularly runs into April. For example, tournaments that begin in the middle of March will likely have one weekend in April.
