The Saints look worth supporting against a likely understrength Inter side on Thursday.
Inter Milan v Southampton – Thursday 18:00, BT Sport Europe
Just over five years ago, Southampton were playing in League One and now they face a trip to the San Siro to take on Inter Milan having registered four points from their first two group games, with two clean sheets. Claude Puel’s side arrive in good shape after a dominant victory over Burnley on Sunday, meaning they’re now unbeaten in seven games. Their form has been built on a solid defence, which has conceded just seven goals in all competitions this season, four of which have come from the penalty spot.
Conversely, Inter Milan are winless in four, losing back-to-back games against Roma on the road and Cagliari at home to sit 11th in the league. However, Saints must remember that this is a side that came 4th in Serie A last season and beat Juventus just last month so the quality is clearly there. Having said that, we’re unlikely to see their best starting XI in this competition, which Frank De Boer has clearly not prioritised, opting for squad rotation thus far which has resulted in defeats to Sparta Prague and Hapoel Be’er Sheva, two sides much weaker than Southampton. With this in mind we’ll take the hosts on but given a point is probably a result the English side would take, we’ll cover ourselves with the draw no bet.
To make matters worse for the Nerazzurri, captain and main attacking threat Mauro Icardi is unlikely to take any part after being ridiculed by the home crowd following his criticism of the fans in a recent autobiography. That, together with the fact that Southampton have scored in just two of their five road games under Puel means that Under 2.5 Goals looks a decent shout.
