Bowl season is always tricky, but it also creates some of the clearest buy-and-sell opportunities of the year. This matchup between Delaware and Louisiana checks just about every box for a classic bowl fade — and it’s why I’m comfortable backing the Blue Hens to win this game outright.
On the surface, Louisiana’s late-season surge looks impressive. The Ragin’ Cajuns rattled off four straight wins to reach bowl eligibility, salvaging what once looked like a lost season. Dig a little deeper, though, and that run feels far more fragile than the record suggests.

Louisiana’s Results Don’t Match the Reality
Louisiana lived on the margins all season. Most of its wins came by one score, two went to overtime, and only one FBS victory came by more than a single possession. Even more concerning, the Cajuns were outgained in four of their five FBS wins — including each of the last three — while routinely giving up explosive plays and massive yardage totals.
That’s not a sustainable formula, especially in a bowl setting where variance tends to swing back toward the mean. Louisiana either outruns opponents or loses, and when that rushing efficiency dips even slightly, there’s no defensive safety net to fall back on. This defense ranks near the bottom nationally in success rate and points allowed per drive, and it’s been shredded whenever the game script tilts even a little off schedule.
Motivation Matters — and It Favors Delaware
This is where the bowl dynamic really kicks in.
Delaware is playing in its first bowl game as an FBS program. For the Blue Hens, this isn’t a consolation prize — it’s a milestone. Programs in this position don’t take bowl games lightly, and effort is rarely a concern. Expect full participation, full focus, and a team treating this like a statement opportunity.
Louisiana, on the other hand, is coming off a 10-win season and a Sun Belt title just a year ago. Now it’s 6-6, fortunate to be bowl eligible, and playing a game in a city it visits regularly for conference road trips. That edge in urgency simply isn’t the same.
Delaware’s Flaws Are Real — But Manageable Here
Delaware isn’t perfect. The defense has struggled against explosive runs, and consistency has been an issue at times. But Louisiana isn’t built to exploit that weakness the way some of the Blue Hens’ worst matchups did earlier in the season.
The Cajuns lack explosiveness offensively, which forces them to string together long, mistake-free drives. That plays directly into Delaware’s strengths. On a down-to-down basis, the Blue Hens defend well, and they have the size up front to hold their own against a Sun Belt roster.
Offensively, if lead back Jo Silver is anywhere close to full strength, Delaware has more than enough firepower to put Louisiana’s defense in uncomfortable positions. This Cajun unit has allowed at least 27 points in each of its last three games and has repeatedly cracked under pressure.
Why Delaware Is the Right Side
This comes down to trust and sustainability.
Louisiana’s season has been built on narrow escapes and outcomes that don’t align with its underlying metrics. Delaware, despite some uneven results, profiles as the more stable and motivated team in this spot. Add in the bowl context, the defensive mismatch, and the urgency gap, and it’s hard not to side with the Blue Hens.

This is a spot where I’m willing to back the better team rather than the better logo. Delaware shows up motivated, focused, and capable of winning this game outright — and at this price, I’m happy to take them straight up.
