DC sports betting returned to Washington between 2018 and 2019, once the PASPA federal ban was overturned. In December 2018, DC introduced new legislation that would legalize sports betting which was then approved in early 2019, creating a new industry for retail and online sports betting in Washington DC.
History of Online Sports Betting in Washington DC
The DC City Council brought about a new sports betting bill to the House in early 2019. The bill was sponsored by multiple council members, demonstrating the importance of the industry in economic terms for the state. Mayor Muriel Bowser eventually put her name to the bill in February 2019, with the bill formally brought into law from May 2019.
As part of the bill, it was agreed that DC Lottery will oversee and regulate sports betting in DC, as well as operating a mobile sportsbook too. GambetDC remains the only mobile sportsbook in DC, although it is possible to bet in person at the William Hill Sportsbook in DC’s Capital One Arena. The William Hill mobile app is also available to those in the vicinity of the Capital One Arena, underpinned by geolocation technology.
Is Sports Betting Legal in DC?
Yes, DC sports betting has been legal since May 2019. It’s now possible to bet on sports at permitted retail sportsbooks, as well as regulated mobile sportsbooks.]
The DC sports betting bill that secured approval by state legislature categorizes mobile sportsbook licenses as Class A and Class B licenses.
