History of online sports betting in Wyoming
The prospect of a regulated Wyoming sports betting industry was on the lips of many once its southern neighbor Colorado opted to launch one of the most robust sports betting markets in the US. This launched in 2020, with a Wyoming state representative Tom Walters also seeking approval for a sport betting bill in the same year.
Unfortunately for Mr Walters, the bill was narrowly defeated. Nevertheless, Walters was far from deterred. He sought about reassuring the state – which has long been a conservative-leaning area – that the expansion of legalized sports betting could bring genuine economic benefits to the people of Wyoming.Representative Walters returned to the House of Representatives with HB 133 – a remodelled sports betting bill. After passing the House on March 10, 2021, the bill was then moved to the Senate for final approval. Just 19 days later, the Wyoming Senate also passed the bill, with the state Governor signing HB 133 into law on April 5, 2021.The Wyoming Gaming Commission outlined the procedures for licensing applications for new and established sportsbook operators on July 15, 2021, with a view to going “live” from September 1, 2021.
