Transfer Odds: Five players to headline Deadline Day drama including Mathys Tel

It looks set to be a busy day for a number of Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Man United and Aston Villa.

Nearly £300 million has already been spent by Premier League clubs in the January transfer window including £145m by Man City.

Will Pep Guardiola's Man City go back into the market after yesterday's mauling at the Emirates? Can Villa really afford to let Ollie Watkins follow Jhon Duran out of the door at Villa Park? And who is in pole position to snap up Bayern Munich's Mathys Tel?

Mathys Tel

After rejecting Tottenham last week, Mathys Tel may yet move to north London with Arsenal and Man United keen on the Bayern Munich star.

Having not made the matchday squad for Bayern Munich’s 4-3 win over Holstein Kiel at the weekend, it’s fairly clear the Bundesliga side are prepared to sanction Tel’s exit before today’s transfer deadline.

Spurs had hoped to secure his services last week only to be rebuffed in their efforts to land the 19-year-old, with Arsenal and Manchester United keen on the Frenchman.

However, the Gunners hold on the upper hand given their Champions League progression. Mikel Arteta is looking to add another striker, with Arsenal linked with a move for Benjamin Sesko over the summer, and Tel would help not only as the lead striker, but down the flanks too.

United will hope to lure Tel to Old Trafford as they seek a replacement for the departing Marcus Rashford, but Arsenal are surely in the front seat to sign the former Rennes man.

Christopher Nkunku

Christopher Nkunku is unlikely to be a Chelsea player by the time the transfer window closes today. The Frenchman is odds on (currently 5/6) to join Bayern Munich as they look to bring in another forward player to ease Tel’s potential departure.

Nkunku arrived at Stamford Bridge with a huge reputation 18 months ago but an injury-hit debut campaign combined with the form of Cole Palmer means he never really had a chance to stake a claim for a starting spot. A return to Germany is therefore likely with Bayern willing to rescue the France international from his Chelsea nightmare.

Plenty rides on Tel’s departure, but with the Bayern board willing to lose the teenager before the 11pm deadline, it could be one Frenchman out and another in at the Allianz Arena.

Axel Disasi

Despite the arrival of Kevin Danso on Sunday, Tottenham are looking to bring in another centre-back before the deadline.

Axel Disasi is one of those rumoured to be on Spurs’ wish list, which would see the Frenchman cross from west to north London. Aston Villa are another linked with a move for Disasi, who has found playing time hard to come by at Stamford Bridge.

Villa are in dire need of defensive reinforcements following Diego Carlos’ move to Fenerbahce, and have been credited with an interest in Villarreal’s Juan Foyth.

However, the Villans may miss out on a move for Disasi should the player wish to remain in the capital. The former Monaco would bring European experience to Tottenham, and is able to play right-back if required. However, there are understandable question marks over his suitability in a high defensive line.

Nico Gonzalez

Manchester City have been active in the January window, bringing in Abdukadir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Omar Marmoush.

However, they are still looking to land another central midfielder, and that has taken the defending champions to FC Porto. The Portuguese side are reluctant to lose Nico Gonzalez so close to the deadline, but there is a €60m release clause that can be triggered.

Gonzalez, too, is supposedly keen on the move, and both the Spaniard and compatriot Rodri share similarities in their respective playing styles.

The 23-year-old is a touch shorter than the latter, but uses his standing to dominate in the air and is able to pick out a teammate with ease. He may well be viewed as the long-term successor for Rodri in the City midfield.

Ben Chilwell

Chelsea could well clear the decks of their out-of-favour high earners before the deadline with Ben Chilwell another now looking sure to depart, albeit on loan.

Chilwell was deemed surplus to requirements last summer, and has registered just 45 minutes of game time this season. Everton had been linked with a move for the England international earlier in the window, but it’s Crystal Palace where he could end up.

Palace will have been gutted to see Trevoh Chalobah recalled by Chelsea last month, while injury to Chadi Riad leaves them short of defenders. A short move across the capital would help Chilwell gain regular minutes in the second half of the season, and allow him to build his confidence.

While he may not usurp Tyrick Mitchell as first choice down the left, the former Leicester man can operate as the left-sided centre-back in Oliver Glasner’s favoured three-man backline.
