BBC SPOTY Odds: Team GB's Tom Daley cut from 100/1 into 8/1 following Gold in Tokyo

Only fellow Olympian Dina Asher-Smith is ahead of him in the market…

Odds have been drastically cut on Plymouth’s Tom Daley being crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year, following his gold medal performance at the Olympic Games.

Following his performance alongside Matty Lee, Daley’s odds have been cut from 100/1 into just 8/1 to win the BBC’s individual award.

Punters have rushed to back Daley following his triumphant performance, with a whopping 81% of all bets this morning backing the 27-year-old.

Daley and Lee have already defied the odds this morning, with the pair priced as 5/1 underdogs to win the 10m Platform event.

The win now means that Daley only trails one athlete in the bookies’ list for SPOTY, with British sprinter Dina Asher-Smith the 5/1 favourite.

Mark Cavendish is 10/1 third favourite in the betting, followed by Laura Kenny (14/1) and Adam Peaty (14/1).

Oddschecker spokesperson Callum Wilson: “After a lifetime of waiting, Tom Daley finally has an Olympic gold medal. "Bursting onto the scene in 2008 as a fresh-faced teenager, the wait for ultimate glory must have felt like a lifetime for Daley. But after this morning's scenes, it will all have been worth it.

“Bookies and punters alike believe he could be rewarded with the BBC’s illustrious SPOTY award, and he could well go favourite today.”
