SOUTHERN SAM was campaigned with chasing in mind over hurdles last term and makes the switch to the larger obstacles having opened his account at Uttoxeter when last seen in May. Oliver Sherwood's five-year-old is just 1lb higher than when a creditable fifth in a hot Sandown handicap over timber in March and could enjoy the step up to three miles here. There may well be more to come from Notachance, who was only denied by a nose on his fencing debut at Southwell, while De Name Evades Me's Chepstow third took a boost when the winner of that contest chased home Sam Spinner at Wetherby. Virginia Chick picked up the pieces to score over course and distance last week and is a must for the shortlist under a 7lb penalty, while Golden Sunrise is another to take seriously.

COOLANLY found himself too far back to make a serious impact in the Silver Trophy on his reappearance, but was passing plenty of beaten rivals when finishing strongly and, with handler Fergal O'Brien flying from his new Ravenswell Farm base, the Grade 2-winning hurdler could make a bright start to life over the larger obstacles. The Mighty Don steps up in trip having shaped nicely enough here last month, while Esprit Du Large was another to create a positive impression when second at Carlisle.

NORDIC COMBINED remains a maiden over hurdles, but he put in an improved effort when third in a Listed contest at Ascot earlier this month and has been located a nice opening here. The five-year-old was suited by the application of a first-time tongue-tie 11 days ago and could have more to offer with that seasonal reappearance under his belt. Smarty Wild was progressive last season and looked to need his reappearance at Cheltenham, while Haldon Hill has had a wind operation and warrants a market check.

Lisa De Vassy was pulled up on her UK debut for Paul Nicholls at Fakenham just over a year ago and can surely do better for the Ditcheat maestro, while Miss Gemstone, an improved second at Ludlow in May, is another to take seriously for Kim Bailey. Preference, though, is for QUEENS CAVE, who finished second at Chepstow last month behind a nice yardstick who has since confirmed the form. The six-year-old showed her true worth there and can take this before moving onto better things.
