NBA MVP Odds: Nikola Jokic is Pulling Away in the NBA MVP Race

There was a time this season when it seemed like Nikola Jokic was going to be on the outside looking in on the NBA MVP race. When Luka Doncic, Jayson Tatum, Gannis Antetokounmpo, and even Joel Embiid were ahead of him. Not anymore, as Jokic is once again the clear favorite with both bettors and the sportsbooks.

Over the last seven days, Jokic has seen 43.8% of bets placed on him to win the award. The next best was Giannis at 22.9% of bets. Of course, Nikola has also seen a major change in his odds as a result of moving from EVEN on January 20th to -162 today. A change from an implied 50% chance to a 61.8% chance.

The major fall has come for Doncic. The Mavericks’ superstar has seen his odds drop from +425 to +1300, a change from an implied 19% chance to a 7.1% chance. He’s still third on the betting market though, as 16.7% of bets have been on him to win the award in the last seven days.

The sportsbooks have Jokic as a lock to win his third straight NBA MVP. Something only Larry Bird, Wilt Chamberlain, and Bill Russell have ever done. If the Nuggets fall short of an NBA title, he would become the first to do it without winning a title during those three seasons. Considering the Nuggets have +800 odds to win the NBA title, fourth best in the league, that’s exactly what the books expect to happen.
