NCAA Tournament No. 1 Seeds Profiles – Teams to Watch
1. Duke Blue Devils (East Region)
- Record: 32-2 (ACC Tournament Champions)
- Tournament Ceiling: National Championship
- Strengths: Duke enters as the No. 1 overall seed and betting favorite after winning both the ACC regular season and tournament titles. Cameron Boozer is averaging 22.8 points and 10.3 rebounds per game, and the Blue Devils rank 3rd nationally in scoring defense.
- Challenges: Starting point guard Caleb Foster is out for the season and center Patrick Ngongba II is nursing a foot injury. The East Region is considered the toughest draw, with UConn, Michigan State, and Kansas all lurking before the Final Four.
2. Arizona Wildcats (West Region)
- Record: 32-2 (Big 12 Tournament Champions)
- Tournament Ceiling: Final Four
- Strengths: Arizona set a program record with 29 regular season wins and held the No. 1 AP ranking for nine consecutive weeks while playing in the Big 12. The Wildcats beat Houston in the Big 12 Tournament final and have a balanced three-headed attack led by Brayden Burries, Jaden Bradley, and freshman Koa Peat.
- Challenges: Purdue earned the 2-seed in the West after a strong Big Ten Tournament run, and Gonzaga at the 3-line carries serious March pedigree at 30-3. Arizona's two losses both came in conference play against elite competition.
3. Michigan Wolverines (Midwest Region)
- Record: 31-3
- Tournament Ceiling: National Championship
- Strengths: Michigan posted one of the most dominant Big Ten seasons in recent memory at 19-1 in conference play, and the Wolverines have held the top spot in betting handle all season. Their offense has been historically efficient, with KenPom numbers comparable to the best teams of the last three decades.
- Challenges: Sixth-man L.J. Cason tore his ACL, thinning the rotation at a critical time. Losses to Duke on a neutral floor and Purdue in the Big Ten Championship game raise questions about whether Michigan can win tight games against top competition.
4. Florida Gators (South Region)
- Record: 26-7
- Tournament Ceiling: Final Four
- Strengths: The defending national champions earned the outright SEC regular season title in what NET rankings consider the sport's best conference. Florida's tournament experience from last year's title run gives them an edge that most teams simply don't have heading into March.
- Challenges: A 91-74 loss to Vanderbilt in the SEC Tournament semifinals raised real concerns about consistency. The South Region puts No. 2 Houston just miles from its home campus, meaning a potential Elite Eight matchup would feel like a road game for the Gators.
Other Top Contenders
1. UConn Huskies (East Region, No. 2 Seed)
- Record: 29-5
- Tournament Ceiling: Final Four
- Strengths: The 2023 and 2024 national champions know how to win in March better than anyone in the field. UConn ranks 11th in KenPom defensive efficiency and has the kind of postseason pedigree that scares higher seeds.
- Challenges: A blowout loss to St. John's in the Big East Tournament final (72-52) is a rough way to enter the bracket. Sharing the East Region with No. 1 Duke means a potential Elite Eight collision with the overall top seed.
2. Purdue Boilermakers (West Region, No. 2 Seed)
- Record: 27-8 (Big 10 Tournament Champions)
- Tournament Ceiling: Final Four
- Strengths: Purdue surged at the right time, beating Michigan in the Big Ten Championship game to earn the conference's automatic bid. Matt Painter's teams consistently peak in March, and the Boilermakers rank in the top 10 in Wins Above Bubble.
- Challenges: A 6-7 stretch over their final 13 regular season games showed real inconsistency. They'll need to prove the Big Ten Tournament run wasn't a blip if they want to navigate past Arizona in the West.
3. Iowa State Cyclones (Midwest Region, No. 2 Seed)
- Record: 27-7
- Tournament Ceiling: Final Four
- Strengths: Iowa State went 4-1 against Quad 1A opponents, the best mark among the 2-seed contenders. Their Big 12 Tournament win over Texas Tech helped cement their spot on the 2-line, and the Cyclones play a physical, tempo-controlling style that can neutralize more talented rosters.
- Challenges: The Midwest draw puts them on a collision course with Michigan, and the Wolverines' offensive firepower could overwhelm Iowa State's preferred pace. A loss to Arizona in the Big 12 Tournament final exposed some scoring limitations.
4. Houston Cougars (South Region, No. 2 Seed)
- Record: 28-6
- Tournament Ceiling: Final Four
- Strengths: Houston reached the national championship game last season and returns a defense-first identity that thrives in tournament settings. The Cougars have the best championship odds among 2-seeds at +1000, and their proximity to the South Region's host site gives them a near-home-court advantage through the Elite Eight.
- Challenges: A three-game losing streak against Iowa State, Kansas, and Arizona in late February exposed vulnerability against top-tier offenses. The Big 12 Tournament final loss to Arizona (79-74) is their most recent result, and momentum heading into the bracket matters.

Top Players to Watch in March Madness
As March Madness 2026 tips off, this year's tournament features one of the deepest freshman classes in recent memory alongside experienced veterans who've been here before. Here are some of the top players to watch:
Cameron Boozer, Duke
The freshman forward is the runaway National Player of the Year. Boozer is averaging 22.7 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game while shooting 58.3% from the field, numbers that made him the highest-rated player in KenPom Player of the Year history. He became only the fourth player in ACC history to win both Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year in the same season. With Duke holding the No. 1 overall seed, Boozer's ability to take over games on both ends makes the Blue Devils the team everyone is trying to avoid.
AJ Dybantsa, BYU
The nation's leading scorer at 25.2 points per game, Dybantsa has put together one of the greatest freshman seasons in Big 12 history. The 6-foot-9 wing broke Kevin Durant's Big 12 Tournament freshman scoring record with a 40-point performance against Kansas State, then dropped 93 total points across three tournament games. BYU's No. 6 seed in the West means Dybantsa will need to carry a heavy load for the Cougars to make noise, but he's shown all year he can handle it.
Koa Peat, Arizona
Peat announced himself on opening night with a 30-point debut against defending champion Florida, and he hasn't slowed down since. The Arizona freshman is averaging 13.8 points on 54.8% shooting while providing the Wildcats with a physical interior presence that complements their guard play. Peat and Brayden Burries combined for 42 points in Arizona's Big 12 Tournament title game win over Houston, showing the kind of one-two punch that could carry the Wildcats deep into April.
Darryn Peterson, Kansas
The potential No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft has the kind of scoring ability and ball-handling that can take over a tournament game at any moment. Peterson's season has been complicated by a lingering cramping ailment that limited his availability, but when he's on the floor, Kansas looks like a completely different team. As a No. 4 seed in the East, the Jayhawks will need Peterson healthy and engaged to navigate a tough path.
Thijs De Ridder, Virginia
Virginia received just two total votes in the preseason AP poll, and De Ridder is a major reason the Cavaliers went from afterthought to 29-5 and a No. 3 seed in the Midwest. The All-ACC First Team selection has been the engine of Ryan Odom's Year 1 turnaround, and Virginia's defense-first identity gives them the kind of floor that translates well to the tournament's single-elimination format.
Other notable players to keep an eye on include Brayden Burries from Arizona (16 PPG, Big 12 Tournament co-MVP performance), Caleb Wilson from North Carolina (All-ACC First Team), Ebuka Okorie from Stanford (All-ACC First Team as a freshman), and Pryce Sandfort from Nebraska, whose transfer from Iowa has helped lead the Cornhuskers to their best season in program history. Each of these players brings the type of skill set that can swing a tournament game, and March has a way of turning the right performance into a lasting moment.
