Alberto Puello vs. Batyr Akhmedov Breakdown

Alberto Puello (20-0-0, 10 KOs)

Turning professional in 2015 at just 21 years of age, Dominican Alberto Puello has rattled off 20 straight wins en route to Saturday’s fight; the biggest of his career that far. On his way to this fight for the vacant WBA light-welterweight title, Puello has picked up the WBA Fedaltin and WBC Latino super-lightweight titles, in addition to, more recently, the WBA interim super-lightweight title.

While the early part of his career was marked with KO/TKO’s, Puello has found it more difficult to finish guys as the opponents have gotten tougher. Over his last seven fights, only two have ended inside the distance as Puello has shown an inability to close out fights when he has his opponents on the ropes.

Batyr Akhmedov (9-1-0, 8 KOs)

For Akhmedov, KO/TKOs have yet to be a problem for the 31-year-old Russian, as he comes into this fight has ended eight of his 10 professional fights via KO/TKO. A gold medal winner in the 2015 International Kadyrov Tournament held in Russia, Akhmedov turned professional shortly thereafter and rattled off seven straight wins before running into Mario Barrios in September 2019.

Losing that fight via unanimous decision, a fight that was for the WBA (Regular) super-lightweight title, Akhmedov has rallied since winning two straight, both of which came inside the distance. Despite having a few professional fights by almost half, Akhmedov may actually be the more tested fighter as his fight history is filled with established guys; starting with Barrios.
