Ashton Jeanty Heisman Odds: Can Ashton Jeanty Catch Travis Hunter in the Heisman Race?

Can Ashton Jeanty win the Heisman? What would have to happen during championship weekend for him to give Travis Hunter a run for his money? Those are the questions that Heisman bettors and sports fans alike are asking themselves ahead of Friday's Mountain West Championship.

For some background, we spent the first half of the season talking about how Ashton Jeanty had locked up college football's most prestigious individual award, only to remember about halfway through the season that there is a guy in Colorado who is a top-5 WR and top-5 CB playing on both sides of the ball.

After about Week 8, Travis Hunter began to run away with the award, according to the Heisman odds, and that's how we ended up here. With Travis Hunter as a massive odds-on favorite and all bettors holding a preseason ticket on him to win the award at like +4000 laughing to the bank.

But, is it possible for Ashton Jeanty's Heisman odds to catch up to Hunter's? Let's take a look at the latest Heisman odds to try and find out.

Ashton Jeanty Heisman Odds - Can He Catch Travis Hunter?

If we're going to talk about Ashton Jeanty's Heisman odds and whether or not he can catch Travis Hunter, it's important to see the picture that sportsbooks are trying to paint for us.

As of Friday morning, Travis Hunter's odds to win the Heisman sit at -5000. That means you'd have to bet $5,000 on Hunter to profit just $100 on his win. The implied probability of Hunter's win, based on those odds, is 98%. It's as much of a lock as we've seen with this award in a few years.

As for Jeanty, his Heisman odds once approached the +100 mark, but we're a long way from that point. Right now, Jeanty's Heisman odds are +1800 and those odds imply a 5.3% chance he wins the award.

Looking at those odds it's easy to forget just how amazing Jeanty was this season. But, he's had one of the greatest years for a running back in college football history.

Jeanty has rushed the ball 312 times for 2,288 yards and an insane 28 TD. At one point this season, Jeaty's odds to score 3+ TDs in a game sat at +300.

For some historical context, Barry Sanders has the most rushing yards in a season, running for 2,628 yards for Oklahoma State in 1988. Jeanty may still break that record as he has at least two games left, but Sanders did it in 11 games on just 344 carries. Jeanty has already played 12 games.

That same year, Sanders also set the record for rushing TDs, finding the end zone 37 times in those 11 games. Jeanty would need to score 9 TDs in his final games of the season to pass Sanders.

In order to make Travis Hunter sweat when it comes to his Heisman odds, Ashton Jeanty likely needs 350+ yards and 4+ TDs against UNLV in the Mountain West Championship. That seems like a lot, but it's not out of the realm of possibility for Boise State's phenom.

Even if he doesn't win the Heisman, Jeanty has one thing going for him over Hunter. If Boise State wins on Friday, they'll clinch a spot in the College Football Playoffs, something Hunter can't say.
