Chris Olave NFL OROY Odds: (+1100), Previous: (+600) Â (Bet $100 to Win $1200)
The wide receivers keep slipping down this list due to a combination of injury, poor performance, and the rookie running backs really starting to hit their stride. Gone from the top five are Drake London and Romeo Doubs. Chris Olave is hanging on by a thread after missing Week 6 due to a concussion suffered in Week 5.
With Jameis Winston hurt, the Saints rolling without Michael Thomas and Jarvis Landry, and Andy Dalton back under center, it's going to be very difficult for Olave to climb out of this hole with such a disjointed offense. He was just hitting his stride before he was hurt against the Seahawks, and he would have to start seeing some massive usage when he returns to start passing some of these guys.
Brian Robinson, Jr. NFL OROY Odds: (+1100), Previous: (Unranked)Â Â (Bet $100 to Win $1200)
The feel-good story of the young NFL season certainly deserves his place on this list. After being shot four times in an armed robbery on the eve of the NFL season, Brian Robinson returned to action in Week 5 and saw his first big game in Week 6. He put up 60 rushing yards and a touchdown in Week 6 and now looks poised to have a large share of the rushing attack in Washington this year.
But there are some red flags that need to be considered. First, We know from plenty of years of experience that J.D. McKissic is the pass-catcher for Washington. Robinson has not seen a single target in two weeks. Second, the coaching staff talked up Antonio Gibson - the back many thought Robinson would replace - and said he needs to be more utilized going forward. This sounds like the beginning of a messy timeshare that will ultimately hurt Robinson's chances.
Kenneth Walker NFL OROY Odds: (+850), Previous: (Unranked)Â (Bet $100 to Win $950)
The time is RIGHT NOW to go place a bet on Kenneth Walker to win OROY this season. He jumped from over +1500 odds recently to just +850 and is third on this list due to a season-ending injury suffered by Rashaad Penny. Walker essentially now has the Seattle backfield all to himself, and he is already showing what he can do.
In his first start, Walker posted 97 rushing yards, 13 receiving yards, and a touchdown against the Cardinals in Week 6. He had 24 opportunities (rush attempts + targets) which is a massive number only the most utilized bell-cow backs receive. If that kind of usage continues all year, Walker might just stroll into the OROY without much challenge.
Dameon Pierce NFL OROY Odds: (+550), Previous: (+450)Â (Bet $100 to Win $650)
It was out of sight, out of mind for Dameon Pierce this week as his odds slip slightly after being on bye in Week 6. That absence, combined with Breece Hall's ascendance, has him back in second place here, but that certainly doesn't mean we have seen the last of Pierce leading this list.
The Texans have games remaining against the Raiders, Browns, Jaguars, and Chiefs; teams are all very friendly to running backs. And before the bye, Pierce's snap rate climbed to 79%, by far his highest rate of the season. In that Week 5 game, he totaled 31 opportunities, good for 113 total yards and a touchdown. I have a feeling we are going to see several more games like that the rest of the year, which should keep Pierce near the top of this list all season.
Breece Hall NFL OROY Odds: (+250), Previous (+600) (Bet $100 to Win $350)
In just three weeks, Breece Hall has gone from unranked on this list to +250 and the leader in the clubhouse for winning NFL OROY for 2022. He has officially passed Michael Carter in just about all reasonable usage metrics, and he is now over 20 opportunities per game each of the last three weeks.
But it's the Jets' offensive philosophy that might seal the deal for Hall to win this award. Over the last three weeks, the Jets have modified their offensive philosophy to much more of a run-heavy approach, apparently trying to hide Zach Wilson's weaknesses. The Jets have called a run play 54% of the time in the last three weeks, which is the fifth-highest in the league. They are also top-ten in the league in offensive plays run per game. The combination of the fast pace and the run-heavy scheme might have Hall battling Walker all year for NFL OROY.
